The Most Devout Prayers of Saint Bridget

  • I recently came across 'The Most Devout Prayers of Saint Bridget' (or sometimes called 'The 15 Prayers of Saint Bridget'). It is said that if these prayers, and the accompanying Pater Noster and Ave for each prayer, are said each day for a year, there are "21 Promises" that will be fulfilled.  The prayers and promises are contained in the below link.

    https://mostsacredheart.com/prayers/st-bridget.html

The prayers were approved by Pope Pius IX in Les Petits Bollandistes, tome XII, but as I have read in various places, the "21 Promises" were not (though that is not meant to say that they could be upheld if someone were to perform the entire devotion).

Has anyone here done this devotion before? The devotion takes about 20 minutes to pray, which isn't much, but I'm not one who has been good at doing something on a daily basis, devoutly, especially every day for a year.

  • From what I understand the promises are a bit sketchy, but I had prayed them when I was younger in that little Pieta booklet that's still floating around, a booklet that focuses heavily on private revelation.

I think the prayers are nice overall, but there's some strangeness there where St. Bridget is allegedly told exactly how many blows Our Lord received, etc.

I think the prayers are OK, but I would only do them if you find them beneficial for your spiritual life, and not for the alleged promises.

So, in order for me to "stick with" something daily for a year, I absolutely must get them done pretty much first thing in the morning.  Just the way my life is structured.

  • Here are some of the promises that I find rather sketchy (and theologically problematic) ...
    Quote
    10. And having led it there I shall give him a special draught from the fountain of My Deity, something I will not for those who have not recited My Prayers.

    11.  Let it be known that whoever may have been living in a state of mortal sin for 30 years, but who will recite devoutly, or have the intention to recite these Prayers, the Lord will forgive him all his sins.

    19. He is assured of being joined to the supreme Choir of Angels.

  • Nos. 10 and 19 are not only speculative, but clearly ambiguous as to what they could mean.

Regarding No. 11, I can't see that happening w/o at least going to sacramental confession.

But that being said, what really drew me to the "promises" were...

    Quote
    1. I will deliver 15 souls of his lineage from Purgatory.
    2. 15 souls of his lineage will be confirmed and preserved in grace.
    3. 15 sinners of his lineage will be converted.

Right ... the promises are very attractive/appealing, but the ones above gave me pause, and then if some are suspect then maybe the others are also?  Does anyone know whether the promises actually originated with St. Bridget or whether they showed up later and could have been faked.

  • Can you elaborate about the Pieta booklet? I have never before heard of it.

  • I prayed them for two years. They certainly didn’t hurt me and are overall very nice prayers. They do take a bit of time, but after awhile you almost memorize them and they are helpful for praying the Rosary and Stations of the Cross.

The Pieta Prayer Book Attached. I don't know about these figures, but they're in the book...

Be it known that the number of armed soldiers were 150; those who trailed me while I was bound were 23.
The number of executioners of justice were 83; the blows received on my head were 150; those on my
stomach, 108; kicks on my shoulders, 80. I was led, bound with cords by the hair, 24 times; spits in the face
were 180; I was beaten on the body 6666 times; beaten on the head, 110 times. I was roughly pushed, and at
12 o'clock was lifted up by the hair; pricked with thorns and pulled by the beard 23 times; received 20
wounds on the head; thorns of marine junks, 72; pricks of thorns in the head, 110; mortal thorns in the
forhead, 3. I was afterwards flogged and dressed as a mocked king; wounds in the body, 1000. The soldiers
    who led me to the Calvary were 608; those who watched me were 3, and those who mocked me were 1008;
the drops of blood which I lost were 28,430.

  • Can you elaborate about the Pieta booklet? I have never before heard of it.
The Pieta prayerbook  was compiled by an American, Tom Zimmer, known as the Hermit of Loreto in the 1970's - 1980's.
While living abroad, he sent them back to the US to his friends the Faulbaums.  Lillian and her husband began publishing the prayers and called the book The Pieta.  They never placed a copyright on the work and many, especially since their deaths, have reproduced the book, adding and subtracting from the original.
Tom was somewhat known for his accurate predictions.  In 1983 he predicted, by name, that Donald Trump would lead the nation back to God.  He didn't specify if it was by leading them or by being so bad that it would be the only recourse the nation had.
Search Tom Zimmer, Hermit of Loreto for more info.
