  • I have a question regarding the Little Office of the BVM.  It seems that in Brazil there is a practice of praying it all at once, at least the Office of the Immaculate Conception.  I received a lengthy traditional version in Latin that I want to use at the traditional hours.  The traditional schedule I understand to be:

    Matins at midnight

    Lauds at 3am

    Prime at 6am

    Terce at 9am

    Sext at midday

    None at 3pm

    Vespers at 6pm

    and

    Compline at 9pm

Is this the correct schedule of the hours for the Office?  Is there any other information that I should know?

    Thanks.
We conclude logically that religion can give an efficacious and truly realistic answer to the great modern problems only if it is a religion that is profoundly lived, not simply a superficial and cheap religion made up of some vocal prayers and some ceremonies...

  • From my limited perspective, I believe you have the hours correctly listed.

Compline might be offered earlier than 9 pm, however. And, indeed, it could be offered right after vespers if you intend to arise at midnight.

Unless you are another St. Peter of Alcantara, who by a special grace, not unlike St. Rose of Lima, was able to stay alive with only one or two hours of sleep every 24 hours, you might need to adjust your schedule to something that would not impair your health or clarity of mind.

Your fervency is most edifying. But common sense is NOT a sin, either.

I got the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary Dominican rite.  Today, as there is no Mass in our area, we are praying the Office to sanctify our day.

What is the common routine or preferable here?  What do others do?  Pray the Lauds and the primers and terce all together at 9am maybe?
