  • The Sacred Order of Friars-Preachers has a beautiful Sequence authored by the great Saint Bernard for the Mass of the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord, which is also found in the third Christmas Mass in their Missal.

    The following text, translation and commentary is taken from the tome Hymns of the Dominican Missal and Breviary (St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1943) Rev. Fr. Aquinas Byrnes, O.P.

  • As can be seen in the above post, the Mass for the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord as found in the Ambrosian Missal contains the Indictio Paschatis whereby the date of Easter Sunday is announced after the chanting of the Gospel lesson.

    A similar thing is to be found in the Roman Rite, though not in the text of the Mass itself. In the various Ordines of past ages, one may find a note stating that on the Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord the moveable Feasts of the ecclesiastical year were announced according to the formula found in the Pontificale Romanum.

    (-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    (-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)(-)

    The above is taken from the tome Ceremonies of the Roman Rite Described by Rev. Frs. Adrian Fortescue and J. B. O'Connell (10th ed.; London: Burns Oates & Washbourne, Ltd., 1958).

    Here follows the text and chant of the solemn announcement of the movable Feasts in the solemn Mass of the Epiphany of Our Lord in Collegial and Cathedral Churches, taken from the Pontificale Romanum Summorum Pontificuм jussu editum a Benedicto XIV Et Leone XIII Pont. Max. recognitum et castigatum. [The Roman Pontifical, Published by Authority of the Sovereign Pontiffs, Revised and Corrected by the Supreme Pontiffs Benedict XIV and Leo XIII] (Ratisbon, Rome, New York, Cincinnati: Frederick Pustet, 1908).

    It is most elegant that Holy Mother Church reminds her children that the Christmastide joys are but a prelude to exceeding great rejoicing of the solemn Paschal festivities: as a good Mother and instructress, Holy Church also gives us the sobering reminder that the joys of Christmas and Epiphany are to give way to austerities and penances of the great and sacred Quadragesimal fast, which alone makes one worthy of the Paschal joys.

  • I just wish I could have found more Solesmes recordings done by Dom Joseph Gajard and other beautiful Benedictine recordings, such as done by the Beuron monastic choir.
