While reading Byzantine Catholic and Orthodox forums I've noticed that most easterners seem to reject the idea of making satisfaction to God's justice, temporal punishment, etc. For example, they see penance as medicinal whereas the west seems to see penance as medicinal but also as making satisfaction to God's justice or restoring the honor which the sin took away from God, which is where temporal punishment comes from. The easterners say the idea of us having to make satisfaction to God's justice for offending Him through sin is foreign to the Fathers. They say it came from St. Anselm. Does anyone know of patristic or biblical defenses to this charge or any good books or resources that cover the subject? Any personal defenses?

The ideas are not irreconcilable. The West just had more emphasis because there's indulgences. The East sees penance as a normal requirement of being a follower of Christ
