  • No it doesn’t, Saturday Mass is for Saturday,Sunday Mass is on Sunday and Christmas Mass is on Monday; unless there is some extenuating circuмstance, and I cannot fathom of one, Mass attendance on the day before obligatory attendance does not fulfill the obligation in spite of what any NO attendee may tell you

  • No.  The First Precept of the Church is to attend Mas on Sundays and Holy Days of obligation.  Even in what is referred to here as the Novus Ordo or Councilor Church, where if a Holy Day falls on a Saturday or Monday the obligation is sometimes dispensed, that is not the case for Christmas this year.  There is a distinct and required obligation of Mass attendance for BOTH the Fourth Sunday of Advent AND Christmas.

With that said, if a Mass that one considers appropriate isn't readily available (I "think" the obligation may not apply if one is 30 or more miles away, I'm uncertain of the exact criteria) or if one must work during the available Mass times, one may be dispensed.  In these cases one is dispensed from the obligation, or the obligation doesn't apply because it isn't possible to fulfill it, one can't fulfill two obligations with one Mass attendance.

  • ok, thank you for your responses. I just found this: The Code of Canon Law (can. 1248) permits Catholics to fulfill their Sunday and other Mass obligations by participating in Mass “in the evening of the preceding day.”
Was this particular canon law pre or post Vatican II?

    .

The Sunday obligation cannot be fulfilled on Saturday. That is an error of the Vatican 2 church.

No, St. Alphonsus says an hour's walk each way would probably not be long enough to dispense someone. I've seen moral theologians in the 20th century who said an hour's drive definitely is not long enough to dispense someone, and they say it would have to be at least an hour and a half's drive.

People claim an hour's drive was considered long enough to dispense someone from Mass before Vatican 2, but I've never seen a figure that low in any theologian that cites a time/distance.

  • Why are we even referring to "Saturday Mass" on a Traditional Catholic site?

Because there are a good number of liberals masquerading as traditional Catholics on this forum.

Some are new to tradition, so maybe they don’t know?

Religion clean and undefiled before God and the Father, is this: to visit the fatherless and widows in their tribulation: and to keep one's self unspotted from this world.

As if people accidentally and unknowingly become "trads"?

No. One doesn’t stumble onto tradition and know everything all at once. Most discover it, understand it to be good, and learn.  I learned gradually. Some things I thought were traditional were not etc etc. It takes awhile to sort out.

  • I've been a trad Catholic for about 18 months, having been raised in the NO. Forgive me
if I'm still hazy about a good many things. I came here hoping to get some answers but didn't
expect to find the kind of condescending manner of Mark 79. Looks like Phariseeism is alive and
    well

I guess I was less referring to the OP (who very well may be new ...as it appears his only experience with the TLM is probably a diocesan TLM) and more referring to the fact that it took a while before anyone even mentioned that there are no such "Saturday" masses.

Mark, keep in mind this is a diocesan TLM if there is one on a Saturday.  Therefore, it might not be a doctrinal pull, but a liturgical pull.  I'll give him the benefit of the doubt at this point.
