Just an anecdote.
In '88, a couple of weeks before the Consecrations, we were having lunch in Suresnes. At the beginning +L poked a bit of fun at me, saying: 'So, you have finally decided to join us...!?' We were five present, everyone smiled...and I was serving the food. He was mildly teasing me, because I had inititially tried the Capuchins in Morgon a few months before, on St. Valentine's day. Then he stated that I was headed for the Brotherhood in Winona, the brand new Seminary, and asked me if that was close to my home in Canada. I replied:' Oh yes, it's close, it's only 12 hours away...' Well the good Archbishop couldn't help but quietly laugh. He had a hard time controlling his reaction. He covered his mouth. "But look, he said that like it was nothing to drive 12 hours! Unbelievable! I suppose that in America travelling long distances is no big deal ".
Actually, my dad said had driven him to Powers Lake around 1970, to visit Fr Fred. Nelson and they drove around for 2 days...he wasn't used to sitting in a car for that long a time...in the prairies. So he remembered.
We were all laughing. In Europe, a 3 hour trip is already a long journey.
