SSPX confirmation questions
« on: April 04, 2022, 09:09:53 AM »
I have a bonus son who is 12.  He lives with his mom most of the time 6 hours away from us.  We have him on school breaks and for the summer.  His mom is Protestant.  When he is with us he attends mass at our chapel.  But he’s not with us enough to have opportunities that most kids going to a Society chapel have (Catholic school, altar serve, etc).

He understands the faith and the sacraments and wants to be confirmed.  The question we have is if it’s even possible to get confirmed by the SSPX in his case?  How hard is the testing?  He’s very bright but we doubt he would pass the rigor of testing at a SSPX chapel.  Are there any good books/resources he could be studying?  Or classes?  Or other options to quickly get him up to speed?  I know it’s our job as parents, but it’s also hard when we only have him for an occasional long weekend and he doesn’t have support for it the rest of the year.

What immediately comes to mind is to ask the priest at your SSPX chapel which catechism they use to prepare people for Confirmation.  He would know best what the expectations are.  When I was confirmed in 1964 in 7th grade we were given a list of questions from which the bishop would choose which ones to ask during his examination of the candidates.

Aside from your question, if this young man stays with you during the summer perhaps you could ask the priest if he might learn to serve at the altar, a summer being adequate time for that.  Then, he would be prepared to serve on the weekends he visits.

Attached is what the SSPX gave us when our first child was preparing for confirmation.  Our children had to learn it word perfectly.
Hope it helps.

And the attached is what we added.  Don't remember where we got these from.  Maybe these will help, too.
