Something extra

Is a very short benediction after Sunday Mass too much to ask of priests to lead, and faithful to attend? The idea here is to do a little something extra considering the condition of the world today especially among those who call themselves Catholic. No doubt there are varied circuмstances, but for the majority, once that first sheep (I joke) exits right after mass, the rest follow (at least they weren't the first out). Perhaps a short benediction in thanksgiving with just a few minutes (even less than 5) of silence would be of great benefit to all. It's only one day per week, surely we could spend a little extra time with our best friend, let alone king and God, thanking him.

What's that saying: Love is spelled T-I-M-E

Please discuss any other ideas.

Some chapels do have benediction after Mass.  Others are not able to because the priest has to travel or has other obligations.

When we were growing up, my mother had the rule that we were not allowed to leave the pews until the candles on the altar were snuffed out.  We have passed that tradition on to our little boys.  Granted it only gives us a couple/few extra minutes after Mass to pray but at our boys' ages (5, 3 and 19 months) that is a big feat after already sitting in Mass for at least an hour.

We also have catechism right after Mass during the school year.

Obviously every chapel is different but have you ever asked the priest at your chapel if he would consider offering benediction?  Perhaps he thinks that there is not enough interest?

It is indeed very heartening and encouraging, especially at chapels where First Friday and First Saturday aren't feasible. This Sunday after Mass we had the full Benediction plus singing the Salve Regina for Our Lady's Nativity. Most people did stay.

Yes, it does seem to sustain and increase the gratitude to Our Lord that comes with receiving Communion. Thank you for starting this thread, St Giles.

Would 15 decades be too much before or after mass instead of just 5? As long as everyone isn't miserably slow at it, once you get going 15 isn't that bad.

We're probably not the ones to be asking! "No worries, what's another 10 decades while we're at it?" ::)

Practically, though, if before Mass it would mean people arriving earlier, which not everyone can manage. If after Low Mass at a small chapel, it might mean a delay in locking up if it's not a coffee-and-donuts sort of place.

Why not ask around where you are? Those are the folks who'd give the most realistic feedback. And once you get a small group started, more may want to join in.
