  • Is this a thing?

Can the Mass for the Immaculate Conception be transferred to the previous Sunday (this year, Sunday 5 December) in the traditional calendar?

My understanding has always been that the IC always is observed, and carries the HDO Mass obligation, regardless of the day of the week it falls on.

    Can anyone clarify?

  • Sounds like a New order move.

I thought the same thing, but even in the Novus Ordo environment, the IC remains on 8 December, and remains an HDO, regardless of the day of the week.  It is one of the few days when even the Newchurch cracks down and says "you have to come to Mass on this day, even though it's not a Sunday, and it may cause you inconvenience".  In defense of the people who find this difficult, we are not Europeans for whom the whole country shuts down on an HDO, we have the commute to and from work (the latter often being in hours of near-darkness this time of year), the kids to pick up from school or extra-curriculars, arranging dinner for the family, and so on.  Even in secular Germany, they observe Ascension Thursday --- Himmelfahrt --- as a civic holiday, and pretty much everything shuts down, I was there, and hadn't allowed for it in my travel plans, as I didn't know they did that.

Very strange.  Has anyone else ever heard of this?

  • I am wondering where SimpleMan got the idea that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is this year being transferred to the preceding 2nd Sunday of Advent?  He gives no source or citation.  That aside, while I can’t cite ecclesiastical directive, typically if and when a commemoration on the Roman Calendar is transferred it is transferred ahead, not back.

I consulted my parish calendar (Diocese of Spokane, WA), the iPieta app, the Catholic Calendar app (Universalis.com), the calendar of lectionary readings from my Verbum scripture study software and app (verbum.com).  EVERY SINGLE SOURCE, yes EVERY ONE, shows the Immaculate Conception being observed on Wednesday December 8 with the rank of a Solemnity.

It is true that in the United States when a Holy Day of Obligation occurs on a Saturday or Monday the obligation is typically dispensed, but parishes are encouraged to provide for additional Masses at times when working people can attend, typically in the evening.

    Here is an article https://www.learnreligions.com/when-is-the-feast-of-the-immaculate-conception-541628

on the dates for observance of the Immaculate Conception.  Again, one notes that if the feast is transferred it is transferred AHEAD, not back.  However typically in Washington State when the Immaculate Conception falls on a Sunday it takes the place of that Sunday.

It was from a priest of a diocese, and not online.  As I do not discuss my exact location --- I am somewhere in the southeastern United States --- I can't say more than that.  I, too, had to crinkle my nose and say "what the... ?" (to myself).  Never heard anything like this before.

  • I found out today that this, indeed, cannot be done.  The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception cannot be transferred to the previous Sunday.

I didn't think that sounded right.

  • Since the Immaculate Conception is a patronal feast day for the USA, it cannot be transferred.
