Title: Solemn High Mass, scene from 1944 Movie Staring Deanna Durbin
Post by: RomanCatholic1953 on April 26, 2014, 09:47:40 PM
Scenes From the Christmas Holiday 1944 Movie staring Deanna Durbin
Solemn Midnight Mass celebrated at St. Vibiana's  Cathedral in
Downtown Los Angeles.

Even though I spent my first two decades of my life in the Archdiocese
of Los Angeles, I never been to St. Vibiana's Cathedral.

These scenes are a great treasure.

Beautiful. I love the intonation of the confiteor at 2:55 in that video.

I just looked up the cathedral on Wikipedia.

As to be expected the church abandoned the building to the city in 1992 after the earthquake- it is now Little Tokyo Branch of the Los Angeles Public Library.

I wanted to know if they took the sledge hammers to the altar as a result of VII.

I know at the Cathedral here in Reno our traditional altar was taken apart and a priest told me it was in reserve in the basement.

But most traditional altars were smashed.

The former altar is on display at the new cathedral as a museum piece.
Many of the artifacts from St. Vibiana's Cathedral have been preserved
in the Cathedral.

A Priest dare not get caught saying the old Mass on the historic
altar.

There is a video online of a tour of the Cathedral that shows the
historic altar.
