This probably varies from one place to another, but what he described is a pretty common method in the United States.

Great post, Emile. I can tell you, poenitens, that this is no eccentric priest. That is pretty much exactly as I learned in the SSPX seminary in Australia and how I have always seen it done. However, Emile's post demonstrates that there are always variations in these things, just as there are in the serving. I had never heard of laying the cincture out in the form of an S, only an M. They both have beautiful symbolism.

I really had no idea that such a thing even existed.

Customs do have a weight, but it does sound eccentric to me to be so particular about something that has no rubrics or rigid rules.
