  • Snippets from Dom Gueranger's The Liturgical Year, Volume 4, pp. 106 ff.

On this day, the eve of Septuagesima, the Church uses a powerful means for infusing her own spirit into the minds of her children. She takes the song of heaven away from us: she forbids our further uttering that Alleluia which is so dear to us.

It is not a mere word, nor a profane, unmeaning melody; it is the song that recalls the land we are banished from, it is the sweet sigh of the soul longing to be at home.
There are no disappointments to those whose wills are buried in the will of God.

  • And all, or the rest, of our Christmas decorations must come down as well, for obvious reasons.

Some years the deadline is Feb 2nd. But not this year. Whenever Septuagesima falls before Feb 2nd, it's the old "Whichever comes first".

You can't celebrate Christmas while the Church is in penance mode, with purple vestments. Time to think about Lent, Our Lord's sufferings, etc.

  • There is an ancient tradition to "bury the Alleluia" on the day before Septuagesima. Altar boys would take a little sign thatt says "Alleluia" on it, and after Vespers on Saturday they would process with it with candles and incense, and bury it in the church cemetery. This custom goes back to the Middle Ages.

This is from a 15th-century liturgical book in France:

    Quote
“On Saturday before Septuagesima Sunday all choir boys gather in the sacristy during the prayer of the None, to prepare for the burial of the Alleluia. After the last Benedicamus Domino [i.e., at the end of the Vespers service] they march in procession, with crosses, tapers, holy water and censers; and they carry a coffin, as in a funeral. Thus they proceed through the aisle, moaning and mourning, until they reach the cloister. There they bury the coffin; they sprinkle it with holy water and incense it; whereupon they return to the sacristy by the same way.”

  • If we bury the Alleluia should we not also remove the palms from our wall crucifixes?

    .

The palms are supposed to be handed in to the church to be burned for Ash Wednesday. This is usually done during Septuagesima season.

That was my point.   They're NOT collected until the Sunday before Palm Sunday in any church I've ever been in including the SSPX,...it's almost like an after thought.  Then they rush to get them burned for Wednesday.  I've been in trad catholic homes where palms are up 51 weeks of the year.

Just checked some trad bulletins and none remind people to bring  in their palms.
I've never seen anything in print about palms ... sooo... in keeping with the liturgical season shouldn't we be removing them from our homes this week?

  • Antiphon.
May the good angel of the Lord accompany thee, Alleluia, and give thee a good journey, that thou mayest come back to us in joy, Alleluia, Alleluia.

Alleluia, abide with us today, and tomorrow thou shalt set forth, Alleluia; and when the day shall have risen, thou shalt proceed on thy way, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.

I assume the poster meant the Sunday before Ash Wednesday (Quinquagesima)?  My diocesan parish (Spokane) and at least one neighboring parish (Yakima Diocese) both had bulletin announcements TWO weeks ago for people to bring in their old psalms to be burned for Ash Wednesday.

  • Hi, long time lurker, first time poster.  Thanks Matthew for the site.

There is a note on the Society's information for tomorrow for the Priest to mention to ask Chapel goers to bring their blessed palms the next two weeks.

    https://1962ordo.today/day/dominica-septuagesima-2-2-2-2-2-2/

"Reminder: Announce that the faithful should bring in their blessed palms from last Palm Sunday during the next two weeks to make the ashes for Ash Wednesday."
