Idk what is meant by that either. Gambling perhaps? I don't see how recreation would be a sinful waste of our time

  • “Act in such a manner that everyone must speak well of you, and then let others talk as they will. You might possibly say to yourself when your faults are spoken of: “That is the least they can say about me; what if they knew all!””

Saint Alphonsus (from “Twelve Steps to Holiness and Salvation)
For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

Some saints were stricter than others about that kind of thing.  I recall the story of one saint who was playing some game during a recreation period who was asked what he would do if he were told that he'd die within the hour.  He responded that he would keep playing the game.  That saint was so completely united to the will of God that even his playing of the game was an act of submitting to God's will.

I remember reading that St. Peter Damian condemned chess since he didn't know much about it and thought it was gambling

  • Patience is a conquering virtue. The learned say that, if it not desert you, It vanquishes what force can never reach; Why answer back at every angry speech? No, learn forbearance or, I'll tell you what, You will be taught it, whether you will or not.

  • “My dear friends, at a time when I was eagerly looking forward to writing to you about the salvation that we all share, I have been forced to write to you now and appeal to you to fight hard for the faith which has been once and for all entrusted to the saints. Certain people have infiltrated among you and they are the ones you had a warning about, in writing, long ago, when they were condemned for denying all religion, turning the grace of our God into immorality, and rejecting our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.”

    St. Jude
May God bless you and keep you
