  • Ignatius, courtier and knight, was wounded at the siege of Pampeluna. During his long convalescence the reading of the lives of the Saints revealed to him that the Church militant needed an army of glorious soldiers to fight the forces of Satan: Pagans, Mohammedans, Protestants, etc. He founded the Society of Jesus and as first General of this new spiritual chivalry he moved to the attack under the motto: "Ad majorem Dei gloriam-To the greater glory of God!" He died with the Holy Name of Jesus on his lips in 1556.

Feast of St. Alphonsus de Liguori
    August 2, 2024|Redemptorists Spirituality
    August 2, 2024

On this feast of our holy founder, I would like to thank all our friends and benefactors for your continued prayers and support. Recently, the kitchen cabinets have been installed (though we are still waiting for the countertops to be completed), and a concrete mixer truck arrived to pour the cement porches in front of the doors to the chapel, refectory, and utility room. You can find new pictures in our photo gallery HERE.
We can all be encouraged by the example of St. Alphonsus’ patience, which was truly remarkable. He embraced every cross for love of God.
He endured four kinds of sufferings in particular:
    1. Physical pains. In his old age (he lived to be almost 91), he was half-blind, half-deaf, and was eventually toothless. He is the official patron saint of arthritis sufferers, since his spine became so deformed that his neck bent his chin against his chest, which caused an open ulcer that regularly had to be cleaned. He also suffered terribly from neuralgia.
    2. Mental sufferings. St. Alphonsus had 3 nervous breakdowns during his life. The first time was as a young priest, when he had overworked himself; the second time was when Pope Clement XIII ordered him under obedience to be made a bishop; and the last time was when Pope Pius VI expelled him from the order that he had founded.
    3. Trials from men. For 25 years, an unjust lawsuit threatened the existence of the Redemptorist Fathers; but after the death of the litigant, St. Alphonsus financially supported the man’s children. Again, for many years, King Carlos VII of Naples, influenced by anti-clerical politicians, was on the verge of closing the Redemptorists, which caused the saint untold stress. And finally, when St. Alphonsus was 85, Pope Pius VI, due to a misunderstanding, expelled the saint from the Redemptorist Congregation. (After St. Alphonsus’ death, and the misunderstanding having been explained, the pope admitted that he had persecuted a saint.)
    4. Trials from God. The devil was allowed to tempt the saint against the holy virtue, even in his old age. His confessor said that St. Alphonsus had never committed a deliberate mortal sin, and yet the saint underwent terrible scruples throughout his life. This was a trial not only for himself, but also for those around him: “Alphonsus suffered,” said his lifelong friend, Fr. Giovanni Mazzini, at the beatification process, “and he made us suffer with him.” However, God removed these fears and scruples from the saint three weeks before his death, so that he approached eternity with perfect peace of soul, the reward of his great love of God and neighbor.
St. Alphonsus’ last words were, “It is all over. Give me the Madonna.” A picture of Our Lady was placed in his hands, and he was seen to go into an ecstasy. He died while the Angelus was ringing at noon on August 1, 1787. In the Tridentine rite, his feast is celebrated the followed day.
St. Alphonsus de Liguori was canonized in 1839, made a Doctor of the Church in 1870, and declared patron of confessors and moral theologians by Pius XII in 1950.
“O God, Who by the blessed Alphonsus Maria, Thy Confessor and Bishop, inflamed with zeal for souls, hast enriched Thy Church with a new religious family: we beseech Thee that, taught by his saving counsels and strengthened by his example, we may happily come to Thee. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.” +

  •  The Transfiguration of Our Lord
This Transfiguration of Our Lord, full of lessons and instructions for us, is honored by the Church in the festival of this day, with a particular view to the raising up the thoughts and hopes of her children, in the midst of the hardships and labors of their mortal pilgrimage, to the eternal repose and glory of their heavenly country.
Consider, in this mystery of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, how wonderfully He was here pleased to confirm our faith, as well by the joint testimonies of the law and the prophets bearing witness to the gospel, represented by the glorious apparition of Moses and Elias with Christ; as by the testimony of God Himself in all the Three Persons, by the voice of the Father, by the glory of the Son, and by the manifestation of the Holy Ghost in the bright cloud.
See how He was pleased by the same glory of this transfiguration to encourage all his followers to bear with patience the afflictions, labors, crosses, and persecutions of this life, in hopes of a share in that eternal glory of which He has given us as it were a sketch in this mystery, ever remembering that of the Apostle, II Cor. 4:17. “that our present tribulation, which is momentary and light, worketh for us above measure exceedingly an eternal weight of glory.” But O, let us take along with us that other lesson also, which we are taught by the voice of the Heavenly Father, in the Transfiguration of Our Lord, that the true way to a happy eternity, and to all good, is ever to hear and obey the Son of God.

  • St. Cajetan founded the Order of the Theatines, who endeavored to imitate the Apostles in absolute poverty, trusting alone in the divine Providence. The "Hunter of souls," as he was called, died in 1547, after a life of extraordinary austerity and mystical experiences.

  • The Cure d'Ars was born at Dardilly, near Lyons, in 1786. The sanctity of St. John Vianney gives to the obscure village of Ars a universal fame. As parish priest he converted sinners and directed souls, not only those of his own flock, but people of all nations and conditions who came to consult this spiritual director. He died on August 4, 1859, and was canonized in 1925.

  • St. Philomena
St. Philomena is a virgin and martyr whose main feast day falls on August 11th. She gave her life for Christ in the Diocletian persecution in the early Fourth Century. Her relics were discovered in 1802 in the ancient catacomb of St. Priscilla in Rome. Very quickly, devotion to her spread. Particularly prominent in this was the Saintly Cure of Ars, St. Jean-Marie Vianney. Other saints prayed to her and sang her praises, especially St. Peter Julian Eymard, St. Peter Chanel, St. Anthony Mary Claret, St, Madeleine Sophie Barat, St. Euphrasier Pelletier, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, St. John Neumann, and St. Anna Maria Taigi.
St. Philomena has been successfully invoked by her suppliants in every sort of need. She has, like St. Rita, become the Patroness of previously “impossible” cases; in particular, the conversion of sinners, the return of the Sacraments of the lapsed, expectant or destitute mothers, problems with children, unhappiness in the home, sterility, priests and their work, the sick, the missions, money problems, the poor, and the mentally ill. Her devotees have discovered that no case, of whatever nature, is too trivial or great to concern her.
St. Philomena’s colors are red and white, signifying her blood shed for the Faith and her virginal purity. She died in her thirteenth year for her faith in Christ and her refusal to break a vow to our Lord. The appropriateness of her patronage in our times is attested to as we witness the Church and the world assailed by a tidal wave of infidelity and moral decadence. St. Philomena is a most powerful intercessor, seemingly “held in reserve” for so many centuries until she could help us in our present era of direst need.

  • St. Clare of Assisi expressed to St. Francis the desire to consecrate herself to God. Together with him, she became the foundress of the Franciscan Nuns of the Second Order: the "Poor Clares." She governed her convent for forty-two years, and died in 1253.

  • Mary was cared for by St. John for twelve years after Our Lord's Resurrection. Her life was spent in helping the Apostles and in praying for the conversion of the world. On the third day after Mary's death, when the Apostles gathered around her tomb, they found it empty. The sacred body had been carried up to the celestial paradise. Jesus Himself came to conduct her thither; the whole court of heaven to welcome with songs of triumph the Mother of the Divine W

  • The holy Patriarch Joachim was the husband of St. Anne, and the father of Our Lady. This feast, originally kept on March 20, was transferred to the day following the Assumption, in order to associate the Blessed Daughter and her holy father in triumph.

  • Born of a good family at Fontaines in Burgundy, Bernard carefully cherished his chastity from his very boyhood. At the age of 22 he entered the monastery of Citeaux, from which the Cistercian Order taketh its name, and brought with him his brothers and many others to undertake the same religious life. He applied himself to vigils and prayer in a wonderful way. The virtues of humility, mercy, kindness, prudence shone out in him, together with constant zeal for meditating on divine things. He was made Abbot of Clairvaux and built monasteries in many places where his principles and discipline flourished for a long time. He also wrote many works in which it is clear that he had been instructed by teaching given him from heaven rather than by his own labour. Because he was implored by great princes to settle their disputes and to arrange the affairs of the Church, he went often to Italy, and was of great assistance to Pope Innocent II in confuting the schism of Peter de Leone. At the age of sixty-three, he fell asleep in the Lord, having earned great honour from the Church. - Matins for August 20

  • Born of noble parents at Dijon in Burgundy, Jane Frances Frémiot de Chantal lost her mother while she was still a girl, and commended herself to the care of the Virgin Mother of God. Her father gave her in marriage to the Baron de Chantal, and she shewed herself to be a valiant woman above all others, making herself all things to all persons. When her husband was killed while hunting, she made a vow of continence, and she so mastered herself that she did not hesitate to act as godmother to the son of the man who killed her husband. Lest later on she should be moved from her determination to observe chastity, she renewed her vow and inscribed the most holy Name of Jesus on her breast with a hot iron. With St. Francis de Sales as her spiritual director, who taught her the divine will, she laid the foundations of the religious Institute of the Visitation of Holy Mary, which she spread far and wide. Finally she bound herself by a vow always to do what she understood to be most perfect. Full of merits, she went to the Lord on the 13th day of December, 1641, at Moulins, and was enrolled among the Saints by Clement XIII. - Reading from Matins
Sermon: St. Jane Frances de Chantal
In prayer, more is accomplished by listening than talking. Here we consider how this principle, and the importance of prayer, played a central role in the life of St. Jane Frances de Chantal, founder of the Visitandines.

  • What man, unless secure in a divine oracle, may presume to speak with impure, indeed with polluted lips, anything little or great about the true Parent of God and of man, whom the Father before all ages predestined a perpetual Virgin, whom the Son chose as his most worthy Mother, whom the Holy Ghost prepared as the dwelling place of every grace? With what words shall I, a lowly man, give expression to the highest sentiments of the virginal Heart uttered by the holiest mouth, for which the tongues of all the Angels do not suffice? For the Lord saith: A good man bringeth forth good things from the good treasure of his heart; and this word can also be a treasure. Among pure mortals who can be conceived of as better than she who was worthy to be the Mother of God, who for nine months had as a guest in her heart and in her womb God himself? What better treasure than the divine love itself, which was burning in the Heart of the Virgin as in a furnace? - Sermon of St. Bernadine (Fourth
