  • St.  Aloysius is a patron of Catholic youth. Amid the seductions of the courts the young prince, full of merits and virtues, kept his first innocence by marvels of mortification. He entered the Society of Jesus in Rome at the age of sixteen, and died there seven years later a victim to the plague, June 21, 1591.

  •  St. John's Eve
The Angel Gabriel announced that Elizabeth would have a son. St. John came to prepare the ways of the Lord.

Three births are celebrated particularly in the Catholic Church: that of Our Lord, Our Lady, and St. John the Baptist. St. John, as pious belief holds, was cleansed of Original Sin upon the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin to St. Elizabeth (Luke 1:57), making him, along with Jesus and Mary, free from sin at birth. And so it is fitting that all three are commemorated with a vigil, each with distinct ceremonies, liturgies, and traditions.
The Vigil of St. John the Baptist (June 23) takes place shortly after the longest day in the northern hemisphere. Appropriately, it captures a sense of light supplanting darkness throughout its liturgy and traditions. In fact, the earliest of references of the Baptist in Scriptures brings this to bear with the Canticle of Zachary: “And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt … enlighten them that sit in darkness, and in the shadow of death…” (Luke 1:76-79).
St. John’s humility notwithstanding, his preaching announced that hope, light, and redemption was at hand, like a beacon of light shining into the murkiness of the Old Testament world. For this reason, our Catholic ancestors (who already had a tradition of summer solstice bonfires from pagan days) lit fires on the Vigil of the Baptist’s birth.
During this night, it was a common tradition to light bonfires in honor of St. John, keeping watch through the short night and – purely practically – use the fires to dispose of the waste from winter and spring projects. Over time, liturgical rites and prayers were added.

    • Nativity of St. John the Baptist

The Precursor of Christ was filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother's womb. After an austere life as a hermit, he announced the Advent of Christ, preached penance, and baptized in the Jordan. He was beheaded during the reign of Herod.

    Our Lady of Perpetual Help
    Desprestaur.jpg
    Chaplet
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost    Amen
    PRAYER
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life our sweetness and our hope.  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve.  To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears.  Turn then most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us.  And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, oh loving, oh sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us O Holy Mother of God. that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.  Amen.
    On the large beads:
Mary can help us, Mary will help us, Mary wants to help us, Mary must help us.
    On the small beads:
Mother of Perpetual Help.    Pray for us.
    Concluding Prayer
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known, that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided.  Inspired by this confidence, I fly to thee oh Virgin of virgins, my Mother.  To thee I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful.  O Mother of the Word incarnate, despise not my petitions but in thy clemency, hear and answer me.  Amen.

  • The picture of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, probably painted in the 13th century, was brought to Rome towards the end of the 15th century. It was exposed in the church of San Matteo. Crowds flocked to this church, and for nearly 300 years many graces were obtained through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin. When the French invaded Rome (1812) and destroyed the church, the picture disappeared. Rediscovered 40 years later, it is again publicly venerated in the new church of St. Alphonsus. The devotion to Our Lady under this title has spread far and wide.

  • The Apostles Peter and Paul are the two Princes of the Apostles, the foundations of the Church, on which she is firmly established as on a rock. This feast is almost entirely devoted to St. Peter, the Bishop of Rome, the great Apostle of the Gentiles being more specially honored on June 30. The lessons and prayers of this Mass describe how his Lord and Master Jesus Christ prepared the fervent Apostle, St. Peter, for the supreme office of the Papacy.

After the Descent of the Holy Ghost St. Peter preached the Gospel in Judea and was cast into prison by Herod Agrippa. He was miraculously delivered by an Angel and established his see first at Antioch, and then finally at Rome, where the first Pope exercised for twenty-five years the Supreme Authority vested in him by Christ Himself. Then he was arrested, and like St. Paul suffered martyrdom in 65. This feast marks the day of the translation of their relics.

  • Mary's first action after God had come to dwell in her was one of self-denying charity. She undertook a troublesome journey in order to visit her cousin Elizabeth. Thus she proclaimed charity to be the virtue which above all Christ brought with Him from heaven. God made Mary's visit the occasion of a wonderful miracle. On her entrance into St. Elizabeth's dwelling, St. John the Baptist was cleansed from sin in his mother's womb. Mary was the channel of this exceptional privilege of the cleansing away of sin in the case of the unborn child. As then, so now: Mary is the channel of all graces, and above all, of the restoration of the sinner to friendship with God.  Mary's charity is not less present now as than at the time of the Visitation. Nay, she is far more eager now than then to promote the happiness and console the sorrows of those who fly to her for succor.

  •  Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Today are commemorated the favors granted to the Brothers of our Lady of Mount Carmel, successors to those early Christians who built a chapel in her honor on Mount Carmel. The institution and habit of the Carmelite Order as now known are due to our Lady's instructions first to St. Simon Stock and later to Pope Honorious III. She promised special protection in life and after death to all who adopted the Tertiary's rule of life and wore her habit.
