  • I'm sure there are several here that are familiar with this devotion where the Angelic Salutation is recited as seven groups of seven for a total of 49 times, each group preceded by the Pater Noster. My question, and maybe I'm being scrupulous here, would this specific Rosary suffice in place of the traditional 5 decade Rosary or should it be done in addition to the 5 decade Rosary? I'm looking to include this in my Lenten devotions, any worthy advice is much welcomed.

  • This is a very good devotion that some of my kids and I do together.  I don’t think it serves as a replacement to the Rosary though.  On a hierarchy of prayers I think the Rosary would be more pleasing to Our Lady as she has specifically mentioned praying it daily as a means to salvation.  It’s a good addition though and takes about as long as a 5 decade Rosary.  There are some wonderful promises attached to it as well.  One of them being that one who practices the devotion will see Our Lady preceding death and also for those who propagate the devotion, no purgatory time.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.

  • What you are inquiring about is the Servite Rosary. It is a distinct devotional prayer from the Dominican Crown (what one usually means by "Rosary") just as the Franciscan Crown (Rosary of the Seven Joys of the BVM) is a distinct devotional prayer. Each has its own separate indulgences and each are of equal worth and dignity. The Eastern Churches do not have rosaries. Rather, those Chirches have the Akhathist Hymn to the BVM asa well as knotted prayer ropes upin which the Jesus Prayer is recited.

When I was a child I knew only the Franciscan Crown because I was in a thoroughly Franciscan environment. I was not exposed to a regular Dominican Rosary until I started school.

I know an SSPX chapel at which the Servite Rosary instead of the Dominican Crown prayed before Mass because the chapel is dedicated to a Servite saint.

I would add the Rosary of seven sorrows to the normal Rosary. I think it's good to do it every Friday of Lent.

  • Thanks, I didn't think anything could replace the 5/15 decade Rosary but I do think a Friday devotion such as this would be an excellent Lenten practice

I know there are quite a number of SSPX chapels dedicated to Our Mother of Sorrows but am unaware of any dedicated to a Servite saint.  Who is the saint and where is the chapel?

In the 1950's the Redemptorists and the Servites got together and published The Way of the Cross.  The Redemptorists contributed the Via Crucis by St. Alphonsus and the Servites contributed the Via Matris.

Below I've taken photos of the Servites Via Matris from that book with the traditional pictures for each sorrow (note the third sorrow picture).
NOTE:  the last picture of a declaration by Pope Piux XII is of significant importance to anyone
praying the Via Matris at home.

St. Peregrine Chapel, Richfield, OH (Cleveland)

Established originally as an independent chapel in 1982 and named in honour of St. Peregrine Laziosi, OSM. The SSPX took possession of the chapel in 1991.
