  • This is a photograph of the holy robe of Jesus (issued in Trier in 1959). Two churches claim to possess the seamless coat Christ wore as he went to be crucified. The parish church at Argenteuil, France, is one of the claimants, but Trier Cathedral in West Germany has attracted more popular devotion as well as papal attention. Supposedly the actual garment that the Roman soldiers took from Jesus before he was nailed to the cross, the holy coat was first displayed at Trier in 1512. During the summer of 1959-only the 17th time that the Trier robe has been exposed to public viewing-more than a million people visited the glass-encased relic.
