    • It is very, very interesting that he lived for close to fifty years with ALS. Most people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis do not get that long to live - usually only a decade.

    And some of this is understood because of your background. You studied physics, if I remember correctly, so Dr. Hawking was a very influential part of that field.

    • I can't help but feel sorry for the guy.  He had a difficult life ... with his illness/disability, and now it very likely does not get much better for the poor guy.  Breaks my heart, really.  Had he offered his sufferings up for God, he could be a saint now.

    Unless Hawkins was baptized during his life and converted in his last days, then he is damned. So how can Catholics say Requiescat in pace, rest is piece, when he is getting the tar beaten out of him in Hell, what kind of rest or peace is that? Even the body that remains behind, does not rest in peace, for it is now under attack from decay. Wouldn't it be hypocritical to say may he rest in peace if we know he is in hell?

    Some here on CI will say, but we do not know if he is in Hell for sure, we do not know if anyone is in Hell.  To that I answer, that we know without a doubt that he is in Hell if he was not baptized during his life and converted in his last days. Notice that the SCPF under Pius X says that Confucius is damned, meaning that Confucius is in Hell. He is in Hell because he died as an infidel, which they spell out.

    No Catholic can say "may he rest in peace" about a publicly known Catholic sinner or any non-Catholic, without spelling out the only hope that they had for salvation. In the case of a known Catholic sinner, like a pro-abortion politician, one might  say something like, I pray that he/she confessed their sins before death. In the case of a non-Catholic, we could say something like; I pray that they were baptized at some point in their life, maybe unknowingly as a baby , and that they converted and confessed their sins before they died.
