  • Please pray for the repose of the soul of Fr. Ted Bradley, a 97 year old former Jesuit diocesan priest who died today around 1 PM.
Fr. Walters was with him when he died, and had given him Extreme Unction.
He was a great promoter of the Latin Tridentine Mass and went out of his way to give people the traditional sacraments.
    May he rest in peace.

  • A friend of mine would forward his sermons weekly and they were warm & spiritually inspiring. He also wrote a story on St. Tarcisius that she shared and I was awestruck at his level of spirituality that shone through his writing. Very, very beautiful. May he Rest In Peace. +

  • Is there a little more biographical information on Father?  Sounds like he lived a very interesting life.  If he's 97, he would have been born somewhere around 1925.  Jesuits tend to be ordained later because of the "scholastic" path they go through, so perhaps around 1955.

I was hoping to find a more complete biographical record (from official sources, which eliminates a lot of internet factoids, but it was after 9 PM when I got home from the mortuary last night).  I'm posting information that I know to be accurate, but it comes from bishops-accountability.org, and I'll not link to them directly (they love the sensation, they aren't always good about checking their facts).

    Quote
Theodore Bradley was ordained to the priesthood Aug. 15, 1958.

He served as an assistant pastor in five parishes of the diocese (Spokane): St. Patrick, Walla Walla (August 1958-August 1960), St. Augustine, Spokane (August 1960-August 1961), the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, Spokane (August 1961-August 1963), St. Francis Xavier, Spokane (August 1963-August 1966), and St. John Vianney, Spokane (August 1966-August 1969).

As a pastor, he served the parishes in Brewster and Twisp (August 1969-July 1972). He was named pastor of St. Joseph in Spokane in 1972.

In 1977 he became pastor of the parishes in Ritzville, Lind, and Washtucna. In 1983 the Sprague parish was added to that list.

For many years he volunteered as archivist for the diocese.

    He retired in 1995.

I am not aware that Fr. Bradley was ever associated with the Jesuits.  I had also thought that he had incardinated into the Spokane Diocese from the Yakima Diocese but I don't have a reference for that.  Either is possible as the first Bishop of Yakima (from its erection in 1951 through 1969) Joseph Dougherty had some dispute with the Jesuits and I believe (though again without a reference at hand) that he may have banished them from the diocese for a time.  The Jesuits currently administer St. Joseph's Parish in downtown Yakima.

While serving as pastor in Ritzville, Lind, Washtucna, and Sprague there was information that he was having an affair with a much younger woman.  I don't recall that he ever denied the accusations, only that he said she seduced him, but I don't have time to find good sources.  I assume she was of the legal age of consent as I don't believe there was a criminal investigation, but she was apparently very young.  He then retired from active ministry and maintained a low profile but remained a priest of the diocese.  He said a twice monthly 1962 missal Low Mass in the Tri-Cities (with ecclesiastical approbation) and served as the volunteer archivist for the Spokane Diocese.  I enjoyed reading his regular historical columns in the diocesan newspaper.

In 2002, following the adoption of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, he was among six removed from active ministry (laicized) in the diocese.  He was listed in the Latin Mass directory produced by Traditio.

An interesting irony is that Mary Queen of Heaven in Sprague (a part of his last pastorate) has a 1962 missal High Mass every Sunday and Holy Day and a Low Mass most week days, and I'm pretty sure that its the Latin Mass that keeps the church doors open financially.

Yes, I attended the Sunday TLM at Mary Queen of Heaven a couple of months ago, and the place was packed. I was a little surprised, given that Sprague is a very small town. I thought the same thing - that the TLM probably keeps the doors open.

Will offer prayers for Fr. Bradley.

  • Thank you for the information about Father.  So he would have been 33 at ordination ... which does sound like a Jesuit track.

  • I found this online archive about Father Bradley's ordination.  I "had it in my head" that Father Ted Bradley had a brother who was a priest.  He actually had three brothers who were priests, all Jesuits.  He began his path to ordination as a Jesuit also but transferred to become a seminaria of the Diocese of Spokane.

The article was published August 15, 1958 in the Catholic Northwest Progress, the newspaper of the Archdiocese of Seattle.   I thought I had bookmarked it but evidently didn't.  Fortunately I had downloaded a pdf, transcribed below.

    Quote
Catholic Northwest Progress August 15, 1958 Page 9

    Fr. Bradley’s 3 Priest-Brothers At Ordination SPOKANE

Three priest- brothers were present in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes Cathedral here this Friday morning for the ordination of Theodore X. Bradley. Together the four brothers comprise the largest number of priests from one family in the Diocese of Spokane.  Father Theodore Bradley’s three priest-brothers are all Jesuits. They include Rev. Richard Bradley, S.J., pastor of St. Joseph’s Church and superior of Marquette High School, Yakima; Rev. John A. Bradley, S.J., of Manresa Hall, Port Townsend, and Rev. Richard I. Bradley, S.J., a graduate history student at Columbia University. Father Bradley was ordained’ by the Most Reverend Bernard J. Topel, Bishop of Spokane. The newly ordained priest is the son of Mrs. Joseph W. Bradley of Spokane and the late Mr. Bradley, who died two years ago. The other brothers and a sister also attended the ordination, together with their mother. They were Joseph W. Bradley, Jr., of Chicago; William F. Bradley, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Richard J. Kilmartin of San Francisco.

BROTHERS TO ASSIST AT FIRST SOLEMN MASS Father Bradley’s three priest brothers will assist him when he|offers his first solemn Mass in St. Augustine’s Parish here Sunday, Aug. 17. The new priest is a graduate of Gonzaga High School here. He entered the Jesuit novitiate at Sheridan, Oregon in 1944, with   additional studies in the Jesuit order at Mt. St. Michael’s Spokane, and Alma College, Los Gatos, Calif.

While in the Jesuit order Father Bradley also taught history and English and coached boxing and public speaking at Marquette High School for three years. He also attended Gonzaga University as a graduate student in history. Father Bradley transferred to St. Edward’s Seminary, Kenmore, in 1956, to complete his studies as a Diocese of Spokane seminarian. He finished his St. Edward's studies in May. The Rev. David Rosage, of the Immaculate Retreat House, will give the sermon at Father Bradley’s first solemn Mass. Following the Mass, there will be a reception in Father Bradley's honor at Marian Hall of Holy Names College.
