A lay person isn't bound to say it any particular way. Matins and Lauds are anticipated during Holy Week and on Christmas Eve.

In better times secular clergy almost always anticipated Matins.  Diocesan Year Books often gave the earliest time which in the winter could be about 2 pm.

Westminster Cathedral, in London, when they had the full Office in choir had Matins at 5:30 pm.
