Most Catholic Churches and definitely Cathedrals have a shops that sell holy statues and other items. Do you have a Catholic bookshop near you?

In my experience, they are very expensive and many are cheap quality.
Some I have seen are modernist and avantgarde art that I
would not touch with a 10 foot pole.

I know what you mean, I hate the modern stuff too.
I managed to get a beautiful gold crucifix and when we visited Fatima I bought a lovely traditional statue of Our Lady and had it blessed by a priest there.

Eventually I've tried that holyart.com... I've bought this wooden Holy Lady of Hope here

It arrived in perfect conditions and in few days and I really apreciate it...the quality is very high and it is clearly hand made, not some kind of plastic/industrial stuff!!
It's a piece of Italian art and spirit in my room...
