Relics for Confused Catholics

  • So today after Mass, a gentleman visiting my chapel had relics given him by a group of Oblates (forget the order), and I received a stone from the stable at Bethleham and stone from the Garden of Gethsemane. I was overjoyed to give a small donation for the relics and receive them, but as someone who has never really used relics:

    1. What class of relic would this be?

    2. How does one use/venerate them?

Thanks in advance and happy Pentecost!
Please disregard everything I have said; I have tended to speak before fact checking.

  • Seeing he was "a gentleman visiting" I would be very sceptical about whether they are relics at all.  How were they packaged/presented?

  • Yes, normally that would be true, this man however works directly with SSPX priests in Canada on these matters. He was given the relics by a group of oblates to distribute. They are put on Holy Cards.

  • These are not relics per se. Relics are parts of the body of a saint, something owned by the saint or something that touched the body of a saint.

  • It is forbidden to buy and sell relics.

  • It's not a relic as Poche mentioned, but a memento. I was given a small Fatima statue by a friend who visited the shrine. I gave it away but kept the bag it came in, it had a illustration of Our Lady with the three children. It's my memento. It came from the shrine, a place I may never get to visit.

  • Someone once brought me back a stone from Medjugorje. Needless to say, I threw it out with the other stones lying around my house.

    HA!
I would have thrown it further away than that.
