  • Today is Pentecost Sunday and I cannot assist at Holy Mass due to family caregiving needs which arose earlier today.  I went to confession and received communion last Sunday.  Would it suffice, for the "public" part of it, for me to go out onto my patio this evening, in the open air, and recite the prayer, and if I am worthy of a plenary indulgence, I might receive it?  (Prayers for the intentions of the Holy Father, that's a no-brainer, and that part doesn't have to be "public".)

Or might it be too loosey-goosey, conservative-Novus-Ordo-ish, to say "I am legitimately impeded from the 'public' aspect of it, so uniting my mind and heart with the Universal Church, even in solitude, will suffice for the 'public' part"?

Someone please let me know sometime today, if you'd be so kind.  Thanks in advance.

  • Pentecost Sunday came and went, and I settled the doubt in favor of going out on the patio shortly before nightfall, and reciting the Veni Creator in Latin.

Plenary indulgences abound, even in the new regulations (which do bind, and do replace the previous ones, to paraphrase Michael Davies WRT the 1983 CIC, unless we're willing to become sedevacantists), and there is no reason not to get them, and get them often, forever trying (in my case) to come to terms with that "no attachment even to venial sin" part.  That part is the kicker.

  • Sorry no one responded to your question until today.  There often can be a dispensation for those who cannot make it to Mass.  Usually you ask your pastor for this I believe.

That being said...  God knows our hearts and the saints say that offering a spiritual Communion when you cannot make it to Mass can sometimes give nearly as many blessings.
