  • If a person goes to Midnight Mass as well as one of the Masses during the day, can he receive Communion at both?  I know what the answer would be under the new Canon Law (it is allowed) but I am wondering what the traditional practice is.  I have read that the current rule was a change but not what it changed from.

  • No, because that would be receiving Our Lord twice on Christmas.  The only exception would be if you received Him again as Viaticuм.

  • Canon 857 (1917 Code of Canon Law):

"No one is allowed to receive holy Communion a second time on the same day, except in the cases mentioned in Canon 858, Section 1."

Canon 858 relates to receiving Communion in two situations:  (1) if the recipient is in danger of death, or (2) if it becomes necessary to consume the Blessed Sacrament to safeguard it against irreverence.

So, as has been stated, the answer to your question is no.  Although, it is laudable to attend Mass more than once on Christmas Day, or any day for that matter.
