Title: Question about Sacrament of Penance
Post by: HeidtXtreme on January 11, 2025, 11:21:00 PM
I have a very simple question that’s been on my mind recently. I know that the scourge Novus Ordo church changed the name of the Sacrament of Extreme Unction, and we should still refer to it as such. And I know Reconciliation is their Modernist and problematic term for Penance, but I’ve never heard anything that says that Confession is also a term the Novus Ordo used to replace Penance. Is it okay to call the Sacrament of Penance Confession? Thank you in advance for answering and may God look down kindly upon you all this new year! Have a Merry and Blessed Christmas season!

They didn't just change the name they changed the sacrament.  Their Blessing/anointing of the sick is nothing like Extreme Unction so we do not refer to their blessing as Extreme Unction.

In pre-VII terminology "Confession" and "Penance" were both synonymous for the sacrament in which one confessed their sins and asked for forgiveness from God and penance and absolution from a priest.  From a reference point of being born in 1951 it seemed that in the area I lived "Confession" was much more commonly used then "Penance".  While the term "Sacrament of Reconciliation" is also in use since VII, my parish and three neighboring parishes all use the term "Confessions" in their bulletin schedule and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes in Spokane uses the term "Penance" in their bulletin schedule.  I am uncertain as to why "Reconciliation" would be considered "Modernist and problematic" ... it is the very sacrament by which one is reconciled to God and the Church.

"Reconciliation" is yet another of those mawkish, maudlin, overwrought terms that Newchurch has used in their relentless quest to rename and redefine everything.  Not to minimize the sensibilities of those who acknowledge even the horror of habitual venial sin, but it comes across as sounding like it applies to someone who has lived in mortal sin for years, and seeks to be reconciled to God (and, in modern thinking, to the body of the faithful), the prodigal son, if you will.

It also gives off the "vibe" that people who are not in such a dire state don't really need to go to confession.  No wonder hardly anyone goes anymore, outside of traditionalist circles.

It's called Sacrament of Reconciliation.
