When I was Novus Ordo, we went to Mass on the Easter Vigil on Saturday Night.
Currently, I attend an independent chapel and our Mass on Holy Saturday is in the morning.
Some people I know have a traditional Mass on Saturday night.
This is confusing to me, and I remember one year on Good Friday we had a person leave Mass because something didn't seem right to them.
Yes, I am fairly new to traditional Catholicism only coming to tradition about 6 years ago.
Can someone help me understand this?
I had the same reaction as you at first. When I was Novus Ordo we also went to the Easter Vigil on Saturday Night, but after becoming a traditional Catholic, we have the "vigil Mass" on Saturday morning. I was a little confused at first, but this is what I have found out in the past couple years:
First of all, in the traditional Catholic Church, Easter actually officially starts at 12 noon on Holy Saturday. (For the Divine Office, Tenebrae, and all the services of the Holy Tridium correspond with Middle Eastern Time, I believe, which is 12 hrs. later...)
The reason the "vigil Mass" of a feast is in the morning is because priests traditionally have to fast from midnight and hence all Masses are usually offered in the morning. (This is why Holy Thursday Mass is similarly offered in the morning instead of the evening.) Yes, there are a few exceptions, that was the general norm until more recent times...
Hope this helps... I don't know much more myself, but maybe you could ask your priest to explain it better than I? :-)
A blessed Good Friday to you!!!
