Question about 1962 Missal

  • When we left NO and started assisting at Mass at SSPX, we bought a missal from the Society.  It is a 1962 Missal and I have used it for 3 years now.  But now I assist at Mass at a private chapel and I have noticed that somethings are not in my missal!  Most noticeable is that right before Holy Communion the altar server says a Confiteor.  I didn't notice at first really but when I tried to follow along in my missal I thought I had a page missing or something.

So...this has started me on research about the missals but I can't find a comparison online of the 1962 missal vs. and older one.  So I don't really know which one my priest is using.  I plan on asking him on Sunday, but I was hoping someone could fill me in on the details.

In the 1962 missal, the confeiteor before communion was suppressed. Many that use the "earlier in the year" version of the 1962 missal (this is what I'm lead to understand, anyway) didn't do that. And so, some that use the later in the year 1962 missal, have suppressed the confeiteor before communion that goes along with that missal published later.

But let your speech be yea, yea: no, no: and that which is over and above these, is of evil.

  • Changes to the Mass started in 1955 (?) I believe with the major overhaul of the rites of Holy Week.  After that it was "tweaked" almost every year. The 1962 is a "hybrid" of the traditional Mass.

There are reprints of the 1945 Missal out there but they are expensive.

    New Roman Missal

Keep an eye open at thrift shops, antique stores, even jumble sales!  Every once in a while an old one will pop up.  I found my 1957 missal at a thrift store several years ago.

  • This may or may not be apppropriate to the discussion at hand but does have some relevance to changes.

In the 1940's and 1950's, the altar boy said the second "Domine, non sum dignus . . ." in representaion of the faithful. I have noticed that the priest now says the second , "Domine, non sum dignus." I drove to Canada to help Fr. Gruner and was honored to serve at the Mass of Fr. Kramer and was encouraged to say the second "Domine, non sum dignus."

So, who what when where made the change. I still now say the "Domine.nom sum dignus. . ."

This may or may not be a serious matter but I consider that there was a change made somewhere along the line.

  • The SSPX first did it even in the 1962 Missal. Even the then Indult Masses added it.

Most of the people at our chapel just say it to themselves but there are some who say it out loud, they are probably the same people who want a "dialogue" Mass.  It is not encouraged or discouraged at our chapel, well at least I've never heard a priest instruct people to say the responses or not say them.  I have been gone from home for several months though, it will be interesting to see what has changed when I get back.

  • I have yet to attend a Missa Cantata, whether it be Diocesan, FSSP, ICKSP, or SSPX, where the 2nd Confiteor was suppressed. Correct me if I am wrong, but in a Solemn High Mass, is not the 2nd Confiteor always said as  the Deacon/ Subdeacon has to chant it audibly, regardless of the fact it is a 1962 Mass, where the 2nd Confiteor was made optional? This has been my experience attending Solemn High masses.

  • Back in the days before the "talks", Fr. Rostand gave a talk and that very question came up.  He explained that ABL decided to follow the new 1962 rubric which suppressed the Confiteor by the altar server just before Communion ( i.e., before the "Ecce Agnus..... Domine non sum [3X] with the Host presented to the Faithful ].  Fr. Rostand stated that ABL took the suppression as a legitimate act by the pope and obeyed it.

I still silently pray it before approaching the altar rail.

But then, I maintain that all of civilization has been in steep decline since, oh, 1299 AD, anyway...

  • Try ebay if you want a pre-1962 Missal.  You might get lucky.
