  • Some people at our chapel have started saying the  Prayers for the Dying in their Agony daily for someone who has no one to pray for them.   Wonderful way to make friends in eternity.

We pray for the souls in purgatory to help get them out but we forget to pray to help souls get in, rather than going to hell.

    Great spiritual act of mercy
"Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered: and them that hate Him flee from before His Holy Face"  Psalm 67:2[/b]

  • It is a pious tradition among the Dominicans to say the entire Psalter (all 150 psalms) when anyone in the Order or parish dies. It is recommended to say or chant the Psalter as soon as possible beseeching Christ to have mercy on the recently departed soul.

    Lord have mercy.

  • Thank you for these beautiful prayers. They are so different than  the Prayers for the Dying found in the Pieta prayerbook. I found some very disturbing phrases in those prayers.

I have heard that's the prayer book the "seers" of Medjugorje say is there favourite, if that doesn't tell you enough right there.
Please disregard everything I have said; I have tended to speak before fact checking.

When Lillian and her husband first compiled the Pieta Prayer Book it looked different from what is being passed off today.
As they never put a copyright on it, many people have "updated" it and of course Lillian and her husband aren't here to object.  Maybe the "seers" have an old copy.

That is why I asked Matthew to post these Prayers for the Dying here just as they are from the 1944-61 Rituale Romanum.

The Prayers for one Recently Deceased come from the prayer book Blessed Be God.

  • A friend recently taught me to pray the breviary, using "Morning Praise and Evensong" (compiled by William G. Storey, D.S.M.).  On p. 307 it has an office which may be said for All Souls day "but also on the occasion of a funeral and as a form of intercessory prayer for the dead at any time of the year".

  • A non-Christian friend of mine was recently murdered. Being new to the faith myself, I wasn't sure what prayer I should say, because the prayers for the dead I found were seemingly written for departed Christians... Is there a prayer I should know about, or can I keep praying "have mercy, lord etc".

Any sort of prayer for the deceased, no matter who they were, is always good. If you're ever not sure exactly what prayers to use for any particular circuмstance or intention, just say Our Fathers or Hail Marys, etc. with the intention at the back of your mind.
