  • I ask everyone's prayers for my mother, who just turned 93 in November, and is receiving hospice care in our home.  She had a bad incident the last of November (just after her birthday), spent several days in hospital, seemed to have recovered, then relapsed and fell ill just after New Year's Day.  She is heavily medicated for reasons of comfort, has pretty much quit taking nutrition (she aspirates much of it), and barely knows she is in the world, sleeps almost nonstop, when she awakes and tries to talk, it is just incoherent babbling.  She is receiving excellent care and is kept clean and comfortable.  The nurse tells me that the end will come any day now.

Up until about three weeks ago, she was an incredibly mentally agile lady, very articulate and intelligent, and could carry on extended conversation and had a sharper mind than a woman one-third her age.  Then after New Year's, she just cratered very suddenly and has declined day by day.

She has received Extreme Unction, professed the traditional Faith vigorously when she was at her senses, and is at peace in her soul.  All we can do now is wait and pray.

Prayers appreciated, as well as for my son (16), who is not handling this all that well.  We are just doing what homeschool we can for the duration.
Dear SimpleMan, Thank you for letting us know. Prayers for all the family. God Bless you.

  • Dear SimpleMan,
It is such a blessing for your family and for your mother to be in your home.  Please know that we are praying for all of you.  When the time comes, reciting the Prayers for the Dying can give you much strength.   You are doing the best for your mother receiving all the Sacraments.  God bless.

Thank you so much.  I have printed these out and shall use them.

I called the hospice nurse to come this evening (not her usual day), and she has placed my mother on daily visits going forward (they normally come once a week).  My mother can no longer take food or drink without aspirating it.  All I can do is sponge her mouth with wet swabs as needed.  For the time being, only liquid painkillers are recommended, and her other pills have been discontinued, in that the risk of aspirating them is greater than any benefit they might afford.

My mother is sleeping almost nonstop, and doesn't appear to be aware of anything.  They are telling me that the end of this life may come in hours or days.

    I'll keep everyone here posted.

  • I'm grateful to have my Mother still, but if she were ill, I would be like your 16-year-old son in full-blown depression.

From my experience once hospice steps in usually it is only a matter of time before someone dies.

Praying for her, you and your son in these tough times.

  • My dear mother passed away peacefully in her sleep about a half-hour ago.  She did not suffer.  As her soul prepared to leave her body, I placed the Brown Scapular on her, blessed her sick bed with holy water, and placed a crucifix on her breast.  My son and I are fine.

Please pray for the repose of her soul.

    RIP
If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?
