I realized I should bump this thread. The high traffic and popularity of CathInfo means that even a 1-week-old thread gets buried pretty quickly. Once enough new threads bury it, it becomes out of sight out of mind and completely off the radar. Unless someone is specifically looking for it, that is. And even then -- it can be hard to find.

AND it looks like there's good reason for that, because we're talking about months of lost wages, and a 1 week hospital stay. Those over 30 know how expensive the hospital is.
I compare the cost of health care to this analogy: a dozen neighborhood kids, selling & trading pine cones, rocks, beads, and other baubles with each other, and their "economy" probably has about $2.00 in change circulating around as well. Kids do work for each other, trade, buy/sell, etc. and that's what circulates in their economy. Now imagine one of the kids wants to buy a $10,000 go-kart. It wouldn't matter how much work he did for the other kids, how many pine cones he collected or sold, or many rocks he sold, etc. There is no way you can buy a $10,000 item with that kids "economy", even if he somehow managed to seize ALL of it.
The economies are simply on two different scales.The same goes for the average Trad family. You can be frugal, make your $50K or $80K a year, pay off your debts, etc. but
health care isn't priced in normal person dollars. You could be hard-working and frugal for 40 years, and lose your entire savings with a 2-day stay at the hospital! It's insane.
