  • Lord and Savior, You have taught us to honor our fathers and mothers, and to show love and obedience toward them. From the depth of my heart I fervently pray to You, Jesus, my God: hear my prayer. Bless my parents who have raised me up with the help of Your grace. Protect them from evil, harm and sickness. Grant them faith, health and joy. Bless all their works that they may give You honor and glory all the days of their lives. Amen

  • A beautiful prayer.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

  • There are countless beautiful Catholic prayers.

BTW, do the schismatic and heretical Greek Orthodox, celebrate a feast of the Holy Family, like the one we just celebrated, which was instituted by a pope.

The Orthodox schismatics do nor accept the papacy but do accept divorce.

The Holy Family are not models of divorce.

Can we keep it Catholic please. There are Orthodox schismatic sites where you can post nice preayers by heretics and schismatics.

Grant them what faith - The Catholic Faith? The one true Catholic Faith outside of which they won't be saved?

We need to pray for the conversion of heretics and schismatics. We do not need to use prayers that are promoted as Greek Orthodox.

Veritasaxio, are you Greek Orthodox? Or were you just being controversial by posting a Greek Orthodox prayer on a traditional Roman Catholic forum?

  • Good evening Roman Catholic,

Thank you for posting your concern and thoughts!

I apologize if my posting of this prayer was offensive in any way.  Please be assured that I did not mean for it to be offensive.

I am not a member of the Greek Orthodox Church.  And, I did not post this prayer to be disruptive or controversial.

When I came across this prayer I was touched by the simplicity and beauty of it and immediately thought of my parents.  As I had seen prayers, etc. posted from the Byzantine Catholic tradition, I thought it would be OK to post this.

As you may know, Byzantine Catholics use very similar liturgical books and devotional books as the Greek or Russian Orthodox do.  So, it would not be unusual for a Byzantine Catholic to make use of this prayer.

I am very much aware of the differences in belief between the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Churches.  And, Byzantine Catholics believe all that a Roman Catholic does – such as the primacy of the Pope, prohibiting abortion, prohibiting birth control, and prohibiting divorce.

The only reason I mentioned “Greek Orthodox” was to give credit to where I took the prayer from.

Again, please accept my apologies.  I will be more aware of possible concerns when I post prayers.

    Blessings on you!

  • Thank you for the reply and assurances.

Yes, Byzantine Catholics do believe what Roman Catholics do because they are of the same Faith. They are still Roman Catholics of the Byzantine Rite rather than Roman Catholics of the Latin rite.

About the prayer - I objected in principle, especially as it was promoted as being a prayer from a schismatic, heretical source.

I understand why you gave credit where it is due, (it is laudable to give sources) but my point is that I do not think it is appropriate for a Catholic site, or for Catholics.

After all we could find Jєωιѕн, Islamic, Protestant (etc, etc.) prayers that say good things too, then post and pray them, but that would not be of a Catholic spirit.

  • Firstly, there is nothing unCatholic about this prayer. It is quite beautiful. I have seen Catholic prayers just as similar.

Secondly, the Byzantine Catholic Liturgy has many of the same prayers as the Orthodox liturgy, so if an Orthodox prayer happens to resemble a prayer  a Catholic would himself probably pray, there is nothing wrong with praying it.

This prayer is completely orthodox in Catholicity.

The prayer is beautiful, yes, only if understood and prayed with a Catholic mindset.

In CONTEXT the prayer is not Catholic.

When the schismatic, heretical Orthodox pray for faith, which faith do you think they are praying about? - Their Greek Orthodox Faith.

Some Jєωιѕн and Islamic, Protestant (etc, etc.) prayers are very beautiful too, considered out of context.

We should not promote the prayer formulae of non-Catholics.

Well, we are not praying it in an Orthodox context. When we pray for faith for our parents, we are obviously praying for the Catholic faith. It is a prayer that any Catholic could have come up with himself.

If you are going to get this Pharasitical, then don't ever pray, "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." because this is a popular formulaic prayer that the Eastern Orthodox church uses. It is called the Jesus Prayer. But I say this prayer many times over.

  • You can insult me all you want but I am not pharisaical (if that's the word you meant to use). I am also not a a liberal-ecuмenical Catholic. I am a traditional Catholic.

BTW, I know plenty about Eastern Rite liturgies and prayers. I have attended Eastern Rite Masses and even served them.

"If you are going to get this Pharasitical" appears to imply something. Maybe it was just unintentional and you meant nothing by it.
