  • As most of you know, my mother has been living with us for 10 years.  She is a hard-hearted Southern Baptist.  I have been trying, praying, and hoping for her conversion at least that long.  On December 9, she had a really bad stroke.  On the 17th, she had surgery on her carotid artery.  She was doing well, and went to rehab on Thursday.  I had a glimmer of hope that she would recover some and maybe her heart would be softened.  Unfortunately, yesterday she had another stroke which has pretty much taken what's left of her.

She can respond to my voice and I think she recognizes me, but she can't follow any commands.  Honestly, I don't know what she understands or not.  My heart is broken in a thousand pieces watching her lie there like this.

Today I place a green Scapular in her pillow case next to her ear.  I have prayed for the Blessed Mother to help my mother now.  Please pray for a Christmas miracle that my mother has a conversion.

I suppose I will never know until the last day if my mother has a conversion or not.

Please also pray for my children.  They love my mother so and this is very difficult for them.

Since my mother has requested no CPR, no feeding tubes, and no intervention, it is likely she will die with in the next week or so.  Your prayers for our family are greatly needed.

  • I will pray for your mother's miraculous conversion, CatMomof7. Nothing is impossible for Our Lord.

Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. AMEN
If anyone says that true and natural water is not necessary for baptism and thus twists into some metaphor the words of our Lord Jesus Christ" Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit" (Jn 3:5) let him be anathema.

  •  :pray:Your Mom may be in exactly the place where Our Lady can reach her at last.  Pray aloud even if she is unresponsive. " Pray for us now and at the hour of death. "
St. Francis Xavier threw a Crucifix into the sea, at once calming the waves.  Upon reaching the shore, the Crucifix was returned to him by a crab with a curious cross pattern on its shell.

    Dear CathMomof7,

Your dear mother has the greatest blessing anyone in her situation could have, and that is the prayers and care of a Catholic daughter and grandchildren.

I have two suggestions, from personal experience.

Did you ever know her to pray the Apostle's Creed?  If so, you can try reciting it softly to her when there are no distractions or interruptions.  You can whisper it in her ear (but don't blow air into her ear through your lips because that makes a disturbing loud noise).

Second, get a Pieta prayer book.  They're about 3-1/2x5" and have a blue cover with Michelangelo's Pieta marble statue on the cover.  Near the back inside is a page called "Prayer for a Dying Person."  Get your children to stand around her bed and recite this prayer all together.  Maybe you can do this with some Advent music that she likes or else some Christmas carols, if you have the children sing sometimes.

Your using the Green Scapular is a great idea.  Remember to say the little prayer on its back every day, "Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death." When you say that prayer every day, it makes the Scapular very powerful.

    Keep blessed Miraculous medals nearby.

If only she had been invested with the Brown Scapular, she could wear one.

My mother was not able to wear any Brown Scapular because she was in a care facility where the director, who was a fallen-away Catholic, said the cord was dangerous for her because with her dementia she might choke herself.  She said, "I know the scapular is symbolic."  I told her, "No, it's NOT just 'symbolic' but it is REAL AND EFFECTIVE."  It made no difference though, and since I had agreed to their terms I had not options.

YOU, on the other hand, have the control of the the situation because your mother is at home.  This is a great blessing, which I am happy to tell you while it's still happening.

This is a signal grace of enormous proportions, and make no mistake about it.  If only I would have known in advance about this.

You can pray the Angel of God prayer in her presence every day:

Angel of God, my guardian dear
To whom God's love entrusts me here,
Ever this day (or night) be at my side,
To light, to guard, to rule and guide.  Amen.

You can pray it in Latin, alternatively:

Angele Dei qui custos es mei
Me tibi commissum pietate superna hodie (hoc nocte)
Illumina, custodi, rege et guberna.  Amen.

This prayer, said every day until death, under the normal conditions, provides a plenary indulgence at the hour of death.  That's about as good as it gets.  Of course, the "normal conditions" would include confession and the sacraments, which precludes non-Catholics, but, if you and your children remain in the state of grace, and pray this Angele Dei prayer in your mother's presence, along with these other things, I'm sure it will be most helpful for her.

She is so fortunate to have her family around her.  And you are so blessed to have this opportunity.

It might be of interest to you that Billy Graham is also having health problems and his family asks for everyone's prayers.  IMHO your mother has a better chance than he does because of you and your children!!!

  • Sympathy to you dear sister! Do pray as follows - I know from personal experience of its veracity.

    Love in Christ,  Andy

Devotion to the Wound on Our Lord’s Shoulder

Our Lord said to Marie-Julie Jahenny:

“I am looking for souls who love Me to sympathize with My sufferings.”

It is related in the annals of Clairvaux that St. Bernard asked Our Lord which was His greatest unrecorded suffering, and Our Lord answered:

“I had on My Shoulders, while I bore My Cross on the Way of Sorrow, a grievous Wound, which was more painful than the others, and which is not recorded by men. Honour this Wound with thy devotion, and I will grant thee whatsoever thou doest ask through its virtue and merit, and in regard to all those who shall venerate this Wound, I will remit to them all their venial sins, and will no longer remember their mortal sins.”

Our Lord said much more to Marie-Julie about this devotion.

“Oh! Consider how I suffered this Wound so deep and little known. I desire that the faithful come to rest their lips on My Wound, that the breath (sighs) of their hearts soften My Wound.” (March 29, 1878)

Our Lord showed Marie-Julie this Wound and revealed It’s depth to her:

“The pain is incomprehensible in the hearts of My children!!! How this devotion pleases and console Me, how often have the prayers of these Wounds have risen to My Heart and have torn (open) the salvation of souls entrusted to Hell.” (May 17, 1878)

Our Lord revealed to Marie-Julie additional promises that would be granted to those who venerate His Wound of the Shoulder and spread the devotion:

    1) “I will bless all the souls who propagate this devotion: I grant them abundant graces.” (March 29, 1878)

    2) “O souls who love Me, who propagate this devotion, I take you under My protection, I keep you under the mantle of My affection.” (March 29, 1878)

    3) “I will dispel the darkness that will come in their hearts.” (December 28, 1877)

    4) “I will console them in their pains.” “I will come in the midst of their greatest afflictions, to enlighten, to comfort them.” (February 8, 1878) (December 28, 1877, February 8, and April 12, 1878)

    5) “I will come to bless them in their undertakings.” (March 29, 1878)

    6) “I will give them a tender love for the Cross. I will come to assist them at the time of death with this cross and I will introduce them into My Heavenly Kingdom.” (April, 12 1878)

    7) “I will sweeten their agony.” (December 28, 1877) “I will come at the hour of death. I will console them in their passage.” (February 8, 1878) “Especially at the hour of death, I will come to give them a sweet moment of calm and tranquillity. I will tell them: ‘O good holy soul, who has spread this devotion that I had so much at heart that it be made known, come to receive the reward of your labours, the fruit of blessing.” (March 29, 1878)

“I will shelter them, I will assist them, I will console all the souls that seek to propagate this Sacred Wound. At the time of death, I will console the souls that have compensated Me by their devotion and compassion to the Wound so deep and painful. I will come to strengthen them in their final fears. I will come and prepare their passage: Thank you, you who have compensated Me for My Pains.” (May 17, 1878)

    9) “See,” Jesus said, pointing to His Wound with extreme tenderness, “all My children who have recognized this Wound, who have venerated It, have prayed to It, will have on the Last Day a great and generous reward. I do not simply show it, I pronounce it. My Word is Divine.” (May 1878)

(Note promise number 2, Our Lord said, “O souls who love Me,”. We must remember that those who love Him keep His commandments.)

Meditations we should reflect on while venerating the Holy Wound on His Shoulder:

    1) The infinite generosity of Our Lord Jesus Christ for having willingly taken upon Himself our iniquities. (March 29, 1878)
    2) His immense goodness in promising to carry our thankless sins on the road to Calvary. (December 28, 1878) He was overwhelmed, even to succuмbing to the painful falls on the Way of the Cross. (February 8, 1878)
    3) Marie-Julie: “Lord, it is our sins that You carry n this bloody and bruised Shoulder. It is our sins that make you suffer great incomprehensible pains as large as the sea. They are our sins that tore Your Sacred Flesh, which turned the Cross crimson.”
    4) The infinite tenderness with which Our Lord Jesus Christ suffered this cruel Wound, which shows how heavy are our iniquities. Sympathize with this immense pain, so little known on earth. (December 28, 1877)
    5) Our Lord invites us to contemplate the Wound so deep and painful, in which we have all participated. Ask for repentance and tears, gratitude and love. (February 8, 1878) It is there that our sins were drowned.

Marie-Julie: “When I see the blood that bathes the Cross, when I see it driven into this Wound, ah! Enormous weight of the Cross, how you make our Redeemer suffer! I can still see the Blood of my Divine king, marked on the paving stones of Jerusalem. Who would dare complain after such a love of Jesus crucified!” (May 17, 1878)

A Prayer to the Wound in Christ’s Shoulder
(Not given to Marie-Julie, but granted an Imprimatur: Thomas M. O’Leary, March 3, 1929. Bishop of Springfield 1949)

“O most loving Jesus, meek lamb of God, I, a miserable sinner, salute and worship the most Sacred Wound of Thy Shoulder on which Thou didst bear Thy heavy Cross, which so tore Thy Flesh and laid bare Thy bones as to inflict on Thee an anguish greater than any other Wound of Thy most Blessed body. I adore Thee O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise and glorify Thee, and give Thee thanks for this most sacred and Painful Wound, beseeching Thee by that exceeding Pain and by the crushing burden of Thy heavy Cross, to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins and to lead me on towards Heaven along the Way of Thy Cross. Amen.”
