Please pray for my father's soul

  • My father passed away this morning -- my family doesn't know exactly how he died.

He was on a lot of strong pain medications, etc. and has been on many prescription drugs over the years. I believe that, one way or another, that is what killed him.

My mother said that his last time at Mass was this past Thursday or Friday (there is an independent TLM chapel 8 minutes from my parents' house) so I hope that his soul was prepared.

As might be expected, my biggest concern right now is how his soul fared. I would be most grateful if you could say some prayers and/or offer up some sacrifices for the repose of his soul. Even if he saved his soul, I fear he might have some Purgatory to suffer. Nevertheless, that should always be the default Catholic assumption.

I am still figuring out how I'm going to get up there (1,200 miles away) for the funeral. I'll probably be away for a week or so.

    In Christ,

    Matthew

  • My mom called right after we got home from Mass to give me the bad news -- they haven't made concrete plans for the funeral yet.

She did say that pretty much all her close friends (and virtually all the family that lives in town) have been by the house -- so at least there is a lot of support there. I wish I could be there sooner, but I'm not just a LITTLE ways away -- I might as well be on the other side of the planet.

If I wanted to DRIVE there, it would take 20 hours of actual driving -- not counting breaks or overnight hotel stays.

If I were only 10 or 12 hours away it would be no problem. I'd just hop in the car and go -- maybe fill up the gas tank a couple times.

    Matthew

  • You have my condolences Matthew, it is in these moments that our faith comes into its own, death is the gateway to heaven, no one meets God without going through it, though you will mourn your fathers loss be comforted in the knowledge that he is one step closer to the eternal reward that awaits all faithful servants of Christ, and though we can no longer see him his soul lives on and one day you will meet him again.

  • I'm so sorry, Matthew. I will remember your father in my Rosary intention tonight. Also, I still have not done my plenary indulgence for this Sunday so, when I get the indulgence by reading the Bible for 1/2 hour tonight, I will offer up my plenary indulgence for your father's soul.

  • Matthew, I don't know how long you will be away, but you are certainly in our prayers. I really want to invite you for a 4th of July at our place. I hope to see Jennifer and your son this Sunday. Absolutely horrible... it makes me think of how fragile life is.
    God bless,

  • The funeral is/was today. Matthew will be gone until Thursday helping his mom, sister, and brother to sort out things and get on with life.

Thanks for the continued prayers! It's been a difficult year for Matthew's family.
