Up and down, to and fro, goes the interior life. It is said that if one does not progress in the interior life one is regressing. How true this is for Perfection only goes one way.
In a sense, we are hypocrites (at least I am) to a degree in that we often have a theoretical knowledge of what it takes to become a saint yet time after time we fail in its application. At times, it may seem that true holiness which is far from sentimental is out of reach, but we need only read the life of Our Lord who took on our nature to redeem us and give us the example par excellence of what it means to live in union with God.
Job said that life upon earth is a warfare but unless we allow ourselves to become comfortably numb with materialism and a certain superficial Catholicism which knows no demands, knows not sacrifice, is "soft", flies from the Cross, is tolerant of evil, disconnects the faith from "real life", and is far from the religion Our Lord established out of love for us, we will never understand what this warfare truly entails. Yet at the same time, it is this constant battle and fight for holiness which produces a true sense of joy and worth. Our Lord has given us every means possible to remain in union with Him which only requires our cooperation.
As Catholics we know why we have been created and where our true destiny lies and it is this understanding which will hopefully keep us fighting the good fight for our eternal salvation. We may struggle ...I may struggle.... but by faith I know God, a knowledge which is absolutely certain since it is God Himself who gives us this faith.
Please pray for me as I encounter bumps along the way of perfection so that I may remain always with Christ and His Church without which life would be meaningless.
