But concerning going back home, ( Australia ?) do airlines require a passenger to be " healthy, or not in a compromised medical condition, fit for travel," before boarding? Or does the passenger sign a disclaimer? Certainly the airline companies just hate making emergency detours because of ONE passenger is experiencing a medical crisis. I am just imagining a worst case scenario, of course. FE or GE, the world is huge!

My experience is that he would probably need a statement that he is fit to fly.
I had a stroke in Madagascar and hospitalisation in Mauritius, and was far from recovered on my return flight which had to be business class. I needed a clearance from the hospital. Airline supplied a wheelchair and we had to change planes in Singapore.
I hope Father is well recovered before he takes the trip.
