  • Hi, first off, I am a Traditionalist Catholic and if you have read some of the posts from my other account (Crusading Canuk) you will know that I am a firm believer in the British Monarchy (as secular rulers certainly not as head of any church). This has led me to trying to find authentically (pre-Reformation) English Catholic devotions. One of these is to Our Lady of Walsingham. The only prayer to Our Lady of Walsingham I could find was from an Anglican source origionally although I found it on a Catholic site. Is it appropriate for me to pray this to Our Lady? And is it ok if I buy an Our Lady of Walsingham statue from an Anglican shop if I cannot find a Catholic site who sells them? Also, if anybody could point me in the direction in a Catholic prayer to Our Lady of Walsingham (and a site which sells Catholic statues of Our Lady) and other English Catholic devotions, I would appreciate it greatly.

  • Hello: You just missed the Feast Day of St. Gregory the Great (12 March), who sent St. Augustine of Canterbury to evangelize the heathen Anglo-Saxons. He is considered by English Catholics as one of the great Patrons of Catholic England.
Please ignore all that I have written regarding sedevacantism.

Really? Well, they only have a Tridentine Mass here once a week on Sundays and I live in Newfoundland so English Feast Days probably wouldn't be celebrated anyways. But does anybody know any private devotions traditionally used by English Catholics?

  • Is the prayer itself orthodox?  It seems to me that, if it is, it becomes a Catholic prayer when said by a Catholic.  Have your statue blessed by a Catholic priest./  It is then an object for Catholic devotion.
Stir up within Thy Church, we beseech Thee, O Lord, the Spirit with which blessed Josaphat, Thy Martyr and Bishop, was filled, when he laid down his life for his sheep: so that, through his intercession, we too may be moved and strengthen by the same Spir

Here is the text of the prayer:

    Walsingham Prayer to Our Lady

(From the Pilgrim Manual of the Anglican Shrine)

O Mary, recall the solemn moment when Jesus, Your divine Son, dying on the Cross, confided us to Your maternal care. You are our Mother, we desire ever to remain Your devout Children. Let us therefore feel the effects of Your powerful intercession with Jesus Christ.

Make Your Name again glorious in this place once renowned throughout our land by Your visits, favours and many miracles.

Pray, O holy Mother of God for the conversion of England, restoration of the sick, consolation of the afflicted, repentance of sinners, peace to the departed.

O blessed Mary, Mother of God, Our Lady of Walsingham, intercede for us.  Amen.

I got it from a site dedicated to the conversion of England to Catholicism. I do have grievences about supporting a heretical religious organisation, but if I can't fiind the statue anywhere else... Anyways, what do you guys think of the prayer? Is it orthodox or should I keep looking?

  • Although I was unable to find prayers to Our Lady of Walsingham, I found some other prayers that may be useful for you.

Here are some excerpts from The Ransomers' Manual, printed in London with an undated Imprimatur granted by His Eminence Herbert Cardinal Vaughan, Archbishop of Westminster.

I don't actually have a statue of Our Lady of Walsingham yet, i was going to ask my parents for one for my birthday in a few months. The only place I could find that sold one online was the giftshop of the Anglican Shrine http://shop.walsinghamanglican.org.uk/acatalog/e_Shop_Our_Lady_of_Walsingham_5.html
I know they are Anglican, however the statue they sell is an exact copy of the one at the Catholic hrine at Walsingham.

  • The prayer seem perfectly orthodox.  Of course, t he best way for Mary's name to receive proper glory in England is for it to return to the Catholic faith.  I have often felt that high church Anglicans are often doing the best they can with what they have, and are well-intentioned.  Perhaps the implosion of Anglicanism will move them along toward the real thing.

Thanks Canuk. Also as to your question the prayer seems totally orthodox to me.

I have often felt the same way. Alot of the time, they are completely orthodox in their beliefs except for thinking the monarch of England can be head of the church. In a way, despite the total debauchery, I feel that the recent changes in the Anglican (and Episcopalian) Church may be for the better. The "ordination" of women will completely destroy any claims of the Anglicans having valid Holy Orders (not that they actually have since Edward VI) and the acceptance of abortion and gαy "marriage" (among other things) will drive away a great many of the more traditional (and orthodox) Anglicans to the True Faith. Although I disagree with some of the discissions regarding it, the creation of the Anglican Ordinate is a perfect example of this.

  • To answer one of your questions: I do not see a problem with purchasing a replica of the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham from the Anglicans because: 1) such treasures as renowned shrines and statues of Our Lady are our rightful birthright, they belong to us as faithful children of our Catholic forefathers, who were betrayed by the schisms and heresies of their aberrant descendants of the 16th and 17th centuries; and 2) the blessing of a Priest will sanctify and consecrate the replica, thus restoring the likeness of Our Lady to its rightful dignity of sacredness.

As to the prayer, there seems to be nothing objectionable to be found therein.

Here's more from The Ransomers' Manual.

Thank you so much for these pages from the ransomers manual, I shall use them in my nightly prayers as soon as I get a chance to copy them off.
