  • Thanks to Lepanto the Turks never achieved supremacy in the western Mediterranean, a Christian debacle in Lepanto could well turn into a Turkish invasion of southern Italy. Although moving a few galleons to the Mediterranean might as well have removed any Turkish threat, the naval battle at Cape Celidonia demonstrated the superiority of the Spanish galleons over the Turkish galleys, five galleons destroying a squadron of 55 galleys.
