  • About ten years ago Pax Vobis, myself, and a few other friends visited Poland, among other places.  We visited the church of the Black Madonna.  Tradition is that the painting was the product of St. Luke the Evangelist, physician and painter.  This painting, I remember the nun telling us, was done on a table-top, the wood of which is found only in the Holy Land.  St. Luke is not one of the Twelve Apostles, but he undoubtedly knew Our Lady and much of his gospel is taken from her.  The inside of the church contains paintings of many of the miracles which have been attributed to this painting.  I have uploaded a few pics. Her feast day is this upcoming Monday, Aug 26, Our Lady of Czestochowa, pronounced, Chest-oh-Hova (I believe).

Many of the pilgrims in Poland argue that this is the oldest painting of Our Lady in the world.

  • Is that the original image? Any kind of dating on it?

Russia also have some fascinating ones... as much was carried off to this region upon the fall of Constantinople... Also another example of how divide and conquer within Christendom destroys so much, like the Venetians looting the city only to have it later fall and then the Venetians would have to fight at Lepanto and others at Vienna because of it... wouldn't have been necessary if they didn't commit the crimes proceeding it. Constantinople would've been the best place to make such a stand when the time came too... but they just let it fall as if they weren't going to be eaten next.

    God Bless

  • Famous hymn to Our Lady of Czestochowa......( i have two icons over my bed of OLC, from Poland)

    (English translation)
    1. How happy all Poland is,
    Mary's glory blooms in her,
From the Baltic Sea to the mountain peaks,
Our country is covered with her mantle.

Ref.: Mother of God, Queen of Poland,
    O our Lady of Częstochowa.

    2. She raised her throne in Częstochowa,
    Big, maybe and haughty,
But the most tender of mothers of the earth,
He suffers together with his children.

    Chorus: Mother of God...

    3. You shone with miracles,
She gave her heart to us.
    People of Poland, dear child,
You have your Mother here, blissful happiness.

    Chorus: Mother of God...

    Ref. Matko Boska...

Da pacem Domine in diebus nostris
    Qui non est alius
    Qui pugnet pro nobis
    Nisi  tu Deus noster

  • I remember reading or hearing something about this that some pagan general tried to strike it with his sword and either his arm fell off or the sword shattered in thousands of pieces before it could connect.  I think he soon converted afterwards.  If anyone knows the story I'm talking about please share because I would like to know and remember the origin to that story.

I've read a similar story before but I also can't remember where. It was during the protestant reformation where they viewed the Blessed Virgin Mary as idolatry and heresy and thus hatred and a miracle occurred when he attacked it.
