  • I was about to start the nine holy Friday next month. But I've seen that good Friday lands on the first Friday in April .

I know we can't receive communion on good Friday.

    Confused 🙈

  • We do receive communion on Good Friday.

The particular about Good Friday is that there is no mass. The faithful and the celebrant communicate using hosts consecrated on the previous day, Maundy Thursday.

Pre-1956 do not receive Communion on Good Friday.

1956+ do receive Communion on Good Friday.
    Noblesse oblige.

  • Also it's not nine first Fridays, its only five Fridays. Saturday has the nine. (We are talking about the same thing, right?)

  • I've always been a bit confused about months that begin on a Saturday.  I've seen some calendars say that it's the First Saturday AFTER the First Friday, but then others that it's just the First Saturday period.

But, yes, First Friday being on Good Friday is a problem for me.  I go to a chapel that uses the pre-1962 Rite, but after much study (having changed my mind on the subject), I stopped receiving Holy Communion on Good Friday.  I would think that in that situation the First Friday would fall on the following Friday.

Sorry, thanks for the correction, I was tired and brain-dead last night and mixed them up. Which is quite sad seeing as how I do the first fridays and saturdays.

Please explain more about this. What changes took place, and why did you stop receiving communion?

Prior to 1955 (and for how long before that I do not know) the Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday Liturgies were all held in the morning and Lent ended at noon on Holy Saturday rather than following a traditional night vigil on Holy Saturday evening.

Pope Pius XII promulgated revisions to the Holy Week liturgies with the degree Maxima Redemptionis on November 19, 1955.  In the pre 1955 rites a single additional host was consecrated at the Holy Thursday Mass, which the priest alone consumed at the Mass of the Pre-sanctified on Good Friday, the people did not receive Holy Communion on Good Friday.

Following Maxima Redemptionis a sufficient number of hosts are consecrated at the Holy Thursday Mass (restored to an evening time) to administer Holy Communion to the faithful on Good Friday.
