I found this a couple of years ago and thought someone might be interested.

From the 1858 Raccolta page 555 and the 1961 Ideal Missal page 49

"The Five Joyful Mysteries are to be said on Mondays and Thursdays throughout the year: and daily from the first Sunday in Advent until the feast of the Purification. The Five Sorrowful Mysteries are to be said on Tuesdays and Fridays throughout the year: and daily from Ash Wednesday until Easter Sunday. The Five Glorious Mysteries are to be said on the ordinary Sundays and the Wednesdays and Saturdays throughout the year: and daily from Easter Sunday until Trinity Sunday"

I guess this is the way the saints prayed the rosary in centuries past.
I tried it and fell in love with the rosary all over again. It really keeps you focused. I've been saying it this way ever since.

For those who pray 5 decades daily you might want to try it.

This is interesting. I've seen charts with Sundays being the days that change according to season: Joyful during Advent, Sorrowful during Lent (even though Sundays in Lent are not days of fast and/or abstinence), and Glorious for all other Sundays of the year.

This is the first time I've noticed "ordinary" being used (pre-Vat.II) in regards to the calendar days excluding Advent and Lent / up to Pentecost. The Newcalendar gets rid of Sundays After Pentecost and replaces them with "Sundays in Ordinary Time," (a 'most banal concept' according to one author).

So from Easter Sunday to Trinity Sunday, you have the daily Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, as well as the Regina Coeli in lieu of the Angelus.

Why not pray the full 15 decades every day?

For the past few days I prayed 45 decades ( 3 rosaries) daily, and the graces I obtained from it have been a great help to me, in practical terms as well as spiritual.

Or for extreme penance, try saying the rosary with arms outstretched and feel some of what Christ suffered for us on the cross for hours. It is something I just tried today and it is an eye opener.
Many agonies were those of Christ our Lord.

Yes Neil I too was taken aback when I read "ordinary" but then I thought about it and back in the 1800's ordinary to them meant "after Pentecost". I don't think they could have conceived of what Vat II would produce.

I really need to get back to doing this. I used to say all 15 decades every day until my father died over a year ago. I still say 5 decades every day, plus the decade I have to say for my Living Rosary decade but I think now would be a great time to start getting back to the 15 decades a day habit.

I have prayed the Joyful in Advent and Sorrowful in Lent. Was not aware of Glorious after Easter. Thank you.
