• October is here and the faithful who are devoted to the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary ought to avail themselves of the great privileges granted by the Supreme Pontiffs for this month, as outlined briefly in Matters Liturgical: The Collectio Rerum Liturgicarum of Rev. Joseph Wuest, C.Ss.R., n. 630, (trans. Rev. Thomas W. Mullaney, C.Ss.R, ed. Rev. William T. Barry; 10th rev. ed; New York: Frederick Pustet Company, 1959):

    Quote
This month is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin. To those of the faithful who in the month of October publicly or privately recite piously at least five decades of the Rosary the following indulgences are granted: an indulgence of seven years each day; a plenary indulgence if on the feast of the Holy Rosary and throughout the octave they do as noted above and if they also confess their sins, receive Communion, visit some church or public oratory; a plenary indulgence if after the octave of the feast of the Holy Rosary they recite at least five decades of the Rosary for at least ten days and if they also go to Confession, receive Communion, and visit some church or public oratory (Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, n. 398)

Many sometimes ask themselves: "Why do my Rosaries appear ineffectual? Is there something I am doing wrong?"

It is now as October has begun that we ought to remind ourselves how exactly we are to recite the Holy Rosary so that it may render greater glory to God through the Blessed Virgin Mary, and be of greater avail for ourselves unto an ever-increasing progress in the way of salvation and perfection. We would thereby be well-disposed to receive the full effect of the indulgences that Holy Mother Church so graciously offers us.

In his Sermon for Rosary Sunday, St. Alphonsus reminds us what exactly this entails. This is taken from the 17th volume of "The Centenary Edition" of the complete works of St. Alphonsus de Liguori, translated by Rev. Father Eugene Grimm, and published in 1890 at New York, Cincinnati and Chicago by Benziger Brothers.

  • In his work The Mother of The Savior and Our Interior Life (trans. ]Rev. Father Bernard J. Kelley; Dublin: Golden Eagle Books, Ltd., 1948), Rev. Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange shows us the value that the recitation of the Holy Rosary can have for our interior lives, which Our Lady of the Rosary herself at Fatima tried to teach us in the multitude of her maternal benignity.

  • In his work The Love of God and the Cross of Jesus, (trans. Sister Jeanne Marie, O. P. Vol. 2. St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1951), Rev. Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange has very beautiful Rosary Meditations that epitomize his sublime doctrines of Ascetical and Mystical Theology.

  • Here is a very great motive for immeasurable confidence in the efficacy of patronage and tutelage of Our Lady solicited by the devout recitation of the Most Holy Rosary.

From the tome of Rev. Fr. Thomas Livius, C.Ss.R., Mary in the Epistles, or, The Implicit Teaching of the Apostles Concerning the Blessed Virgin Contained in Their Writings, Illustrated from the Fathers and Other Authors with Introductory Chapters (London: Burns & Oates, Ltd., 1891), here is a very edifying elucidation upon the first Epistle of the Apostle St. Paul to the Corinthians.

  • From the tome Spiritual Riches of the Rosary Mysteries by Rev. Fr. Charles J. Callan, O. P., and Rev. Fr. John F. McConnell, M. M. (New York City: Joseph F. Wagner, Inc., 1957), here are some beautiful prayers that are suggested for a Rosary Novena, a devotion richly indulged for October.

  • From The Litany of Loreto by Rev. Fr. Richard Klaver (St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1954), here are some beautiful and edifying reflections upon the title Vas insigne singularis wherewith Holy Mother Church extols the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Litanies of Loreto.

This title is so full of mysteries and is very pertinent to our days, wherein consecration to Jesus through Mary is morally necessary in order to attain to the uppermost heights of Christian perfection and contemplation. It is principally by means of the Holy Rosary that such consecration is preserved and perfected.
