Title: Novus ordo funeral
Post by: JOANORCM on September 13, 2021, 02:36:52 PM
I attended my friend's funeral today with my husband, in a small ethnic parish built in the late 1800s and not changed except for the NO liturgy and table. Despite the NO, the church was so trad and beautiful.

I decided to wear a black lace mantilla to show respect for the fact that it was once a traditional Catholic Church. As I covered my head to go inside, one of the older funeral directors said to his young fellow funeral director, "Wow that's really from the old days! You don't see that anymore!"

The younger funeral director said, "I like it! It shows respect!"😁

The Archdiocese recently decommissioned this church meaning its only for weddings and funerals now. Next step is usually selling it. Its got a rectory on one side and a closed parish school on the other. Only problem is there's just street parking. I wonder if the SSPX would buy it? Its in great shape and the only thing trad Catholics would need to do is throw the NO table out. They'd have to do a third party sale though bc the Archdiocese would I'm sure rather sell the bldg to a Buddhist temple than true Catholics.

Btw having never truly been part of the post Vatican 2 religion, can someone tell me why they nod in front of the sanctuary instead of genuflecting? What's with that?

My husband, from a protestant background, went to many traditional Catholic Masses with me, and this was his first experience with a NO. He told me later that he sees why I call the NO "protestantized".

No one's even going to think about it if you won't tell anyone where it is.

Who should I contact about possibly buying it?

How about posting the church's name and address right here?  Surely it's not a secret that an archdiocese has an extra church building here and there.

If the church is only used for weddings and funerals the Blessed Sacrament is not reserved in the tabernacle.  Was there a sanctuary lamp lit?  If not you do not genuflect to an empty tabernacle.
In this case the people were correct not to genuflect.

The nod may have been to the crucifix.
Both actions are totally traditional

But they were starting to just nod to towards the altar in the early 2000s before I escaped from the Novus Ordo whether the "Blessed Sacrament" was reserved in a tabernacle behind the altar or not.  I think, since many churches moved the tabernacle to an obscure corner or a closet, the habit of nodding just became standard in many places.

Additionally, they were telling people to make a slight bow while standing behind the person receiving communion in order to show the proper respect to the Eucharist.  So this may also be what they were doing.

In the case at this church, because it is now only a wedding/funeral site, the tabernacle is probably empty.  Of course, the tabernacles at all Novus Ordo churches are empty of any Real Presence.

... I'm sure rather sell the bldg to a Buddhist temple than true Catholics.

That's why you always hire a front-man to buy it for you, a "person of color" ... possibly even a Baptist minister.  Heck, they might give it to him for free.

Right! I won't mention the church name/location bc I don't know who reads this forum who might want to warn the Archdiocese not to sell to trads.

There was a large hanging sanctuary lamp lit, and after the NO consecration/communion, I saw the priest put Hosts into the tabernacle.

That makes a whole lot of difference.  You didn't mention that in your opening post.

A front man is going not going to tell them it's for a trad group.  The archdiocese already knows that they don't want to sell to trads.  Your refusal to tell us where it is will just help keep it from being sold to trads anyway.

Nodding is what to do when the Sacred Species is not present, or used to be present.  It shows respect and reverence even in absence.  Sometimes people bow as is done in Eastern rites. Either may also be done if a person is physically unable to genuflect.
If doing the latter, be sure to come to a full stop to show proper respect.  A priest told me to stop for three seconds or silently say, “Blessed be Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament of the altar.”  I’ve seen too many irreverent people get lazy by giving a brief nod as they dash past the altar or in and out of the church.  Yes, even trads are guilty of it. Adults must set the example for the children, some of whom don’t know any better.  They copy one another in ignorance.

I would just e-mail any trad clergy that you know or know of with a brief message and a map link. If it's God's will the right group will hear of it.

Maybe Fr. Hewko?  I’m not in touch with him, but I sometimes catch a Mass online.  I believe he mentioned something recently about wanting to start a chapel, preferably in a rural area.

This is interesting.  Earlier today I thought of calling Fr Hewko about it. His name had just popped into my mind.

There may well be NOs on here lurking, who hate Tradition and might warn the Archdiocese.
