  • The Novena to St. Raphael the Archangel begins today and ends October 23rd. His Feast Day is October 24th. Here's the Novena for those who want to pray it.

Novena to Saint Raphael the Archangel starts on Oct.15 ending Oct.23, vigil of the Feast day of Saint Raphael, Archangel.

    Novena to St. Raphael

    Most merciful Archangel St. Raphael,
who faithfully accompanied young Tobias from Syria to Media,
please accompany me, a wretched sinner,
on this dangerous journey through life on earth to my eternal home in Heaven.

    Glory be to the Father.

    Most wise Archangel St. Raphael,
while walking beside the Tigris River, saved the
young Tobias from death, teaching him how to
obtain control of the fish which threatened his life,
save my life also from the attacks of the evil one
who threatens the sanctity of my soul.

    Glory be to the Father.

    Most powerful Archangel St. Raphael,
who by a miracle of God, restored the precious gift
of sight to the blind Tobit, heal me,
free me from spiritual blindness and lift the veil of
    spiritual blindness of the world,
so that we may come to know and love the divine splendor of Truth,
who is Jesus our Lord, God and Redeemer.
Protect me from deception, and help me to live and honor God’s laws.

    Glory be to the Father

Holy St.Raphael, I have confidence in thine intercession.
Pray for me during this novena especially for ...

    (mention your special intentions).

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be

  • Thanks for posting this... some things just popped into my head and St. Raphael came to mind as well. Didn't realize his feast day was this soon.

  • St. Raphael the Archangel is a great celestial Patron to have!

He is Patron of: 1) travelers, 2) those who are seeking for one to betroth and espouse, 3) those who are afflicted with physical sickness, 4) those who are afflicted with spiritual troubles (especially temptations of the devils), 5) those who strive to be chaste in body and pure of heart, 6) those who seek domestic and filial tranquility and order, 7) those who strive to cooperate with the graces of Holy Matrimony that they may thereby sanctify their homes and families, 8) young Catholics, 9) everyone else!

The Book of Tobias in our Sacred Scriptures narrates the circuмstances that substantiate why the patronage and tutelage of the Archangel St. Raphael ought to be invoked for the above intentions. It would be most pleasing to this celestial Prince for his clients to meditate upon the passages of this beautiful Book of Holy Writ.

Here is a prayer I found in the tome Byzantine Missal for Sundays and Feast Days with Rites of Sacraments, and Various Offices and Prayers published at Birmingham, Alabama, by St. George's R. C. Byzantine Church in 1958, (having been printed at Tournai, Belgium, by Société Saint Jean l' Evangéliste, Desclée & Cie).

  • Since St. Raphael's patronage and tutelage are especially efficacious for those who pray for the precious grace of purity (whether to preserve it in its baptismal innocence or to attain to the virginity of heart given by the rehabilitation of penance and mortification), here is a very apt prayer I found in the tome I mentioned above.

  • Thank you Hobble for the additional insight, I appreciate your knowledge on Saints and their Feast Days!

St. Raphael is my Patron Saint. I fit the description of a few of the things he is Patron of. In addition to what you mentioned, Hobble, I think he is also good for preventing one from having bad and/or immoral dreams, right?

    Oh yes!

Every night pray to the glorious Prince St. Raphael that he might deign to exercise his power upon you either immediately himself or mediately through the instrumentality of the blessed Spirit that has been given to you as your Angel-Guardian, so that the demon may be kept away from you throughout the night, just as St. Raphael drove away the demon Asmodeus and enchained him in the Egyptian desert (Tob. ch. viii., 3).

Pray to Mary Most Holy, who has been crowned and enthroned as sovereign Queen and Chieftainess of all Angels, to command St. Raphael to come to your assistance in all your necessities, and through her Immaculate Heart offer the Sacred Heart of her Divine Son to the Most Holy Trinity in praise and thanksgiving for the exceeding great glory and grace to which St. Raphael had been predestined for all eternity and which he now enjoys everlastingly in celestial beatitude. Do this especially during Holy Mass, offering our beloved Jesus-Hostia to the Father as a sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving for all the glories and graces that have been given to St. Raphael.

The Holy Rosary is the best way to continue this holy oblation of the Holy Sacrifice, meditating upon the Mysteries of our Redemption in such a way as to encourage us to imitate the examples of Jesus and Mary and arrive at such degree of grace that we may progress more and more in the interior life, and become all the more worthy of the patronage and tutelage of St. Raphael. Thus, by the grace of God, we may one day be able to greet him ourselves in the celestial kingdoms.

Such practice is most pleasing not only to St. Raphael, but to whatever Saint whom you wish to honor.

I hope this helps you make a very meritorious and efficacious Novena!

  • Here is a treat for those who are making a Novena to the Archangel St. Raphael.

Here is a commentary for the Mass of the Feast of this celestial Prince taken from The Sacramentary (Liber Sacramentorum): Historical and Liturgical Notes on the Roman Missal (vol. V, trans. Arthur Levelis-Marke & W. Fairfax-Cholmeley; New York: Benziger Brothers, 1930), authored by Dom Ildefonso Schuster, O. S. B.,  then Abbot of the Monastery of St. Paul 's Without the Walls, and later elevated as Cardinal and Patriarch of Milan by Pope Pius XII.

What better material for meditation for a Novena to a heavenly Patron or Patroness than the Mass formularies that Holy Mother Church has enshrined in her glorious Missals!

Post script: The commentary makes references to the Masses of St. Michael the Archangel. The commentaries for these Masses can be found here: http://www.cathinfo.com/catholic.php?a=topic&t=16133&min=1#p6
