Need help using Latin Missal

  • I’m still very new to the TLM, but I’m getting better at navigating the missal.

However, I’m confused about the daily masses.  Now, I’m only seeing Sunday masses in the proper of the seasons.  Are there prayers, epistles and gospels for each day of the year?

Another example, I saw on a traditional blog that yesterday was Our Lady’s Saturday, but I can’t find that in my missal.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

  • Yes, there are proper epistles, gospels, and prayers for each day. Which missal do you have? Some missals are just for Sundays, and others include weekdays as well. It sounds like you may have a Sundays only missal.

If you have a missal including weekdays, Our Lady's Saturday Masses should be in the section labeled "Votive Masses".

Our Lady of La Salette, pray for us!

  • I have the Baronius Press 1962 and the Fr. Lasance 1945.
I found the voice mass section, but it doesn’t have specific dates, and the liturgical calendar pages has yesterday included in a “feria” grouping.
For example, what exactly would be the prayers and readings for tomorrow?
Sorry for such a newbie question!  Thanks for your help!

Do you attend mass where the 1962 or pre-1955 missal is used?

If the 1962 missal is used at your mass tomorrow, it is a Feria day "occurring after the first Sunday after the Epiphany." You should find the instructions in the Proper of the Season section of your Baronius missal (guessing since I don't use the Baronius), after the Feast of the Epiphany but before the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord.

If the pre-1955 is used at your mass tomorrow, it will be the Octave-Day of the Epiphany. It is in the Proper of the Season section of the Lassance.

Hope this helps. I will address your original questions in another post.

Most daily masses (except on special high feasts, octaves, ember days, lent, easter, etc.) will be found in the back of the missal in the Proper of the Saints section, with possible references to the Common of the Saints section.

Some days are Feria days, meaning that the readings for the previous Sunday are used because they don't have a specific feast associated with that day. But keep in mind that on Ferias, priests sometimes will say a "votive mass," which he will normally announce before starting. The votive masses are found in the back of the missal in their own section.

Our Lady on Saturday should be found in the section called "Common of the Feasts of the Blessed Virgin" (or something like that). At our SSPX chapel, however, First Saturdays always use the reading from the Feast of the Immaculate Heat of Mary (August 22).

The more you attend the daily masses, the easier it will get. You should definitely get in the habit of setting your ribbons before daily mass. Sometimes it will get a little complicated (3-4 ribbons).

Wow, that IS quite complicated!  Your post was very informative, thank you!  I’m trying to follow on my own at home during the week.  I’ll do the best I can, be patient, and give myself time to get the hang of it.  Thank you!!!

  • Sophia Institute Press has created a monthly missal for those new to tradition. I believe it is $5.00 per month and will be shipped to your home each month. It contains all of the Propers and ordinary for each day of the month.
