According to the theory that the effects of grace and the presence of the Holy Ghost are visible in the bodies of those who are justified, it is good to look at photographs of the great saints to see what God's grace looks like, and when we venerate such photographs, it is not really the person we are venerating, though we honor them as well, but the visible presence of the Holy Ghost in the body and soul of the great saint whose image we are venerating. It is not that we can actually see the Holy Ghost, but that His presence and His grace has transformative effects that are visible in the appearance of the bodies and especially the faces of the just.

This is my favourite such photograph. It is Therese of Lisieux on her sick bed shortly before her death. When I first saw this picture I felt a sharp pain in my heart because of the power and beauty of this image. If it is true that Saint Therese of Lisieux was the greatest of modern saints, then this photograph may be the one photograph that exists that captures the highest degree of grace in a saint that was ever captured on film, unless there are other photographs of her that were taken after this one and before her death. If anyone knows of other photographs of saint Therese that were taken on her death bed, I would like to see them. I have seen the famous photograph of Saint Therese which was taken shortly after her death, but although this photograph is a beautiful example of the effects of grace and of a good death, at the moment the photograph was taken the grace was no longer present because her soul had left her body and was already in Heaven.
