    • Just a curiosity of mine - could a mute man become a priest?  It would seem to me that, being unable to speak, he would not be able to confer any of the Sacraments, which require a vocalization ("ego te baptizo," "ego te absolvo," "hoc est enim corpus meum," etc.).  I don't suppose sign language would work.

    What would happen if a priest became mute post-ordination, either through illness or injury?

    • First of all: fundamentals... The primary duty of the priest is to act as a mediator between man and God.  It follows that the most sacred duty of the priest is the recitation of the psalter, aka the Divine Office.  Contrary to popular belief, the priesthood was not instituted to confer the sacraments and say Mass, these are tertiary functions.  Therefore, a mute man could be a priest.  Could he offer Mass?  No.  Could he forgive sins?  That is a question I cannot answer.  However, since a priest can hear confessions via a translator, it follows that he might be able to give absolution silently.  By the same token, he might be able to give a blessing and benediction silently as well, merely willing it.  But, at the very least, muteness would be an impediment. Whether dirigible, I do not know.

    That is a very good question...
    I guess it would be a decision left to a true pope in general circuмstances...

    • I was always taught that only the spotless lamb is offered for the priesthood by the parents, a priest has to be physically sound. If he has a finger missing he can't be ordained. If he loses a finger, his sight, his tongue after being ordained,he is still a priest, but in the case of the more serious defects he would need the bishops permission to offer public mass.

    Today they likely take anybody.

    Interesting take.  It seems to conflict with Saint Paul's opinion where he wrote to the Hebrews:  Hebrews 5:1: "For every high priest taken from among men, is ordained for men in the things that appertain to God, that he may offer up gifts and sacrifices for sins".

    That would be the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

    What St Paul is saying here is that the primary duty of the priest is to be a mediator between God and man.  Of course, saying Mass is the apex of that duty, but not the only one.  Note that the priest, and even the deacon, is obligated to say the divine office, but the priest is not obligated to say Mass.  Also note that the sacrament of Holy Orders occurs in degrees, and that an indelible mark is placed on the minor orders (which, by the way, is a big, big problem for the Novus Ordo, as it calls into question the validity of their ordinations...).
