  • I have the Angelus Press 1962 missal. I was thinking about purchasing a 1955 missal to see what differences there are if any. Which would you recommend?

  • I like the St. Andrew Daily Missal with vespers and also The Roman Missal. I've heard good things about the Cabrol Missal as well. The English translations will vary depending on the missal.
If you assist at the 62, any missal will work just fine for the most part. During Holy Week however you'll notice the differences.
Check on Ebay. Sometimes you can find some real treasures on there.

  • St Andrew missal which is published by St. Bonaventure (you may order through their website online or through your bookstore).
Father Lasance Missal which is published by Omni Publications (you will need to call the order in or through your bookstore).

The biggest difference will be the Holy Week liturgy. There will also be certain feast days missing that were established later.

If you need additional help- I know a bookstore manager who might assist.

  • I know some differences between 1955 and '62 are the moving of the Ember Days, the adding of St. Joseph in the Canon and I think, the classing of feast days.

  • Thanks for this thread.  I hope to obtain my first Latin Missal for Christmas.

If your looking for a real in depth missal you should get a St. Andrew's or Lasance, or something along those lines. They contain a good amount of information rather than just the propers and the ordinary. They have explanations of feast days, special prayers, and other bits of information.
If your wanting something simple to guide you through mass, I like the small Stedman Missal. The St. Joseph's Missal is also pretty basic.

  • I have a Lasance. Love it. (Fraternity Publications prints one, easy to find)

The St. Andrew is as good.

They are different, but equally great.

    They are excellent missals.

If you really want to go beyond the matter they include in either of those missals get a reprint of Dom Prosper Guerangers "The Holy Mass" and the multivolume "The Liturgical Year"

Otherwise, the matter inside of either the Lasance or St Andrews should keep you busy

  • St. Andrews.  You pay more, but Boy!, you get more explanations of liturgy and feasts and such.  It is worth it!
