  • Hello everybody!

I decided to post some of the Marian devotions I have found in the various and sundry tomes that are found in my library.

The Salve Regina, the beautiful anthem that usually concludes the recitation of the Holy Rosary, is explained admirably by Rev. Fr. Aquinas Byrnes in his book Hymns of the Dominican Missal and Breviary (St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1943).

Attached are is the pertinent text and commentary.

    Enjoy!  :reading:

[Ed. Ah, sorry for last attachment being too large! I can't seem to edit it!]

  • The book The Mirror of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Speculum Beatae Mariae Virginis) and The Psalter of Our Lady (Psalterium Beatae Mariae Virginis) (trans. Sr. Mary Emmanual, O.S.B.; St. Louis, MO: B. Herder Book Co., 1932) which contains these two opuscules of the Seraphic Doctor, St. Bonaventure, is to be highly recommended.

The Psalterium is the most interesting, since it is a Marian adaptation of the Roman Psalter. St. Bonaventure gave emended the initial verses of the Psalms so as to make them into praises and prayers to Our Lady. The most interesting feature (at least to me) was how the Saint emended the Canticles of the Divine Office, and he even adapted the Te Deum.

Saints such as St. Alphonsus and St. Louis Marie expressed admiration for this work of St. Bonaventure.

Attached are the scans of the pertinent pages.

  • St. Bonaventure even adapted the Athanasian Creed, and very beautifully too.

  • Thanks Hobble I'd never learned about the Franciscan Crown before! And the adapted creed by St. Bonaventure is quite good too!
