  • There's a better obituary here with photos:

Sorry to hear this.  RIP
I live minutes away from St. John’s Byzantine Catholic Church referenced in the obituary. I have never gone. But Matthew was only a year older than me. I would have liked to meet him. I will be praying for him. What a loss.

  • It might be consoling to Matt’s family that he was so beloved on this forum by people who never met him (ie., because we knew him anyway).  I wonder if whomever tipped off Matthew that Matto had died might be able to let his family know about this thread?

  • This is very sudden. Hopefully he passed peacefully and is enjoying his reward.

    God bless.

  • God bless Matto! 40 is very young but it sounds like he lived a worthy life. I'm glad to have interacted on the forums with him, no matter how limited it was.

  • Matto was a kindhearted fellow. His love of nature and animals brought to mind Saint Francis. Rest in Peace.

...and they could also be instructed how to view his posting history, which for them would be like having new conversations with their departed (another value-add of CI membership).

I'm certainly going to miss his presence on this forum. Seeing as I do not live that far away from NYC and that he had once posted about being willing to meet up with people from the forum irl there, I was considering taking him up on that but never got around to it. Getting to meet him probably would have been the only reason I would go to NYC these days, with how draconian it's become I never want to set foot there again. He must have shone like a bright light in that dark place, now NYC has one less good soul among its immense sea of bad ones. I didn't even know him that much, but I almost always appreciated what he had to say.

Did some digging. Here's him discussing the miracle that happened to him:

    Quote
I was at Mass once and when the priest held up the host, it lit up like a light bulb. Only I saw this.

    https://www.cathinfo.com/the-sacred-catholic-liturgy-chant-prayers/for-my-father/msg84326/#msg84326

Although I did not get to meet him in this world, I hope that I may meet him in the next.

May the angels lead thee into Paradise; may the martyrs receive thee at thy coming, and bring thee into the holy city, Jerusalem. May the choir of angels receive thee, and with Lazarus, who once was poor, mayest thou have eternal rest.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord; and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

  • Such sad news... I'm impressed by the number of members of this forum who have been genuinely affected by Matto's presence here. I know that I was many times influenced, for the better, by his "childlike" simplicity. He will be much missed... Requiescat in pace, Matto!

  • I met Matto on a number of occasions and once drove him to one of the first ‘resistance” masses in New Jersey.  I remember him as someone humble, quiet, a gentleman amidst so many forward, self-promoting people as one finds in NYC.
    He will be missed. :incense: R.I.P. 🦋 🪦 🦋
