    Melissa A. (nee Aardema), beloved wife of Thomas E. Kunkel; devoted mother of Timothy, Emma, Elizabeth, Jacob, Gabriel, Raphael, Monica, Patrick, Anna, Martin, Amelia, Olivia, and the late Robert Kunkel; dear daughter of Janne Ahlgrim and the late Robert Aardema; loving sister of Jessica (Justin) Ackley and Amy Lord; cherished daughter-in-law of Joseph and Mary Ruth Kunkel; she is also survived by several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends. Passed away unexpectedly on April 5, 2013 at the age of 41.

    A visitation will take place at Vorhis & Ryan Funeral Home, 11365 Springfield Pike, Springdale from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013. A visitation will also take place at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 2300 Robertson Avenue, Norwood from 9:30 AM until the time of Requiem Mass at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, April 10, 2013. Interment will follow at Mother of God Cemetery in Latonia, KY. Memorials may be made to the Tom Kunkel Fund at any Bank of Kentucky branch, or they may be sent to Angela Kunkel, 12199 McCoys Fork Road, Walton, KY 41094. Condolences to www.vorhisandryan.com

    For some reason, I get the feeling I should know who this is.  Someone has
    mentioned the name Kunkel to me, but I have no idea when -- may have been
    many years ago.  

    Is Springdale in Ohio or Kentucky?  What about Norwood?
    Obviously, Cincinnati is Ohio.  I'm not familiar with the area, only by maps and
    what I've heard.


    41 is so young.  When my mother was that age she was just starting her
    family.  Can anyone tell us what the cause of death was?  The closest mention
    is "unexpectedly."

    Really?  I have that same thought.  Back in 2004 I made a set of vestments for the Bernie Kunkel family.  it was thru someone else, so I dont know where the family was located.  I dont know if  Melissa was related to them.

    • She died of a massive heart attack.  From what I know, she had a condition which also killed her father around 50 or so.  As for Bernie Kunkel, Emerentiana, he is Tom's (Melissa's husband's) brother.  There are many, MANY Kunkels in northern KY, all salt of the earth and many still adhering to the traditional faith.

    God reward all of you for your prayers.
